Food while at Mayo Clinic: Are there options for dietary restrictions?

Posted by cthompson @cthompson, Dec 11, 2018

I have an appointment in Minnesota. I'll be flying in from Texas. I am on a very restricted diet, due to massive pain that ensues when I eat much else. Basically, what I can eat now is chicken, potatoes and rice. I don't think I'll be able to bring food, as I'm flying but does the clinic have food for people with strict dietary restrictions? I'm unsure of how to get myself fed while I'm there that week. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. We were there last March. My son has CG and can barely eat. We found the hotel to be very accommodating and will meet your dietary needs. Good luck.

Which hotel? Sorry, I'm completely new. Just made the appointment and trying to figure everything out.

The Khaler Grand Hotel. It was amazing and connected to Mayo's front door. Underground and above ground walkways.

There are also many hotels with kitchens where you can prepare your own meals. You'd probably need to rent a car to be able to go to the grocery store.

I would be very surprised if you could not find chicken potato & rice at the Mayo cafeteria itself or as suggested at the Kahler hotel

Thank you members for sharing your great suggestions. I think that the patients, themselves, are one of the best sources of practical information!
I think that you will find that the people in Rochester are very aware and supportive of the medical needs of the patients who spend time in the area. So you just have to mention your dietary needs.

I want to add an additional resource to this conversation: An update on the free Concierge Service at Mayo Clinic. Formally concierge services were largely limited to the Rochester campus. now visitors to any of the 3 Mayo campuses can get help with initial travel questions .The concierge service has recently added Live Chat. Now you can chat with a live person about preliminary travel questions.
Here is the link to the live chat service in the online Visitor's Guide - https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide

I send you my thoughts as you embark on your journey.

Right across the street from St. Mary’s hospital is the Canadian Honker restaurant which has some soups, mashed potatoes, etc. May be able to find something that would work for you. Their menu is online.

My husband was at St. Mary on August 3rd surgery. We stayed across the street at Aspen. There is a restaurant called Tonic next door that is ver healthy organic style. I’m sure you can have your diet met there.

We were in Rochester Monday-Thursday for Mayo this week and frequently went to the Honker as we do every visit , they are very accommodating! They even let me eat off the senior menu for smaller portions, I’m no where close to being a senior!!
