Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

Only 13 tricker treaters so plenty left for me 🍫. I do like the little ones. They look & act so cute. One little boy held out his bag again so I gave him another bag. He held his bag out again, Smart little tyke. Why go to a bunch of houses if he can load up at one.

We didn't turn on the lights for the trick or treaters, but we usually aren't here anyway on 10/31. A cold front came through here at 4pm and drove our little celebration into the garage (doors open.) Auntie arrived with a dozen (!) elaborately carved pumpkins, which we lit with emergency lights. Wish I had more pics, but we were busy enjoying our time together. Our daughter got video of the puppies and me playing tag before supper, then the boys got to hunt in the yard for their treats. The 4 yo was hilarious, holding his hand up to "shade" his eyes and scanning back and forth with his eyes while searching...he is very shy with strangers, so probably enjoyed this more than trick or treat.
And we were able to surprise my best friend on her birthday, at home recovering from arm surgery, with a video call so she could see the littles in their costumes.
All of us agreed it was a GREAT Halloween.

Today I am grateful for sunshine, for plenty, for my loving family and friends, and for hope of a vaccine on the horizon.

Today I am very grateful for my husband. He has worked hard at getting the firewood ready for this fall and winter, for use in the fireplace. How blessed I am to have a gearhead for a husband. Today he changed the oil in my car, rotated the tires and checked the brakes, doing a maintenance for me. He also does all his own service work on his vehicles and motorcycles [and has the tools to do so!].

I have a man who can fix anything and does. They are the best.

@gingerw My husband also used to do everything but as he has aged he does very little now. He does minor fixes of things, I refer to him as McGiver because of some of the things he does.

I am grateful for the health I have had since my transplant, for my son and daughter who are very caring adults, for being able to survive this time with very few effects other than isolation.

My daughter, her husband, and their dog visited us last week, they left on Sunday. They isolated and got tested before coming but now we won't see them again until after the holidays. It was a joy to have them here. They love it because they sequester themselves in upstairs bedrooms all day and then come down for a great meal, all ready!

Attached is a picture of when her dog, Lady, was rescued, and a picture now. She's a very sweet and cute dog.

Today I am grateful for our health care system. However much we like to complain, and whatever shortcomings there might be, good care has given me my life back. And finding a great new eye doc for my husband has given him a new attitude - his rapidly worsening vision is from cataracts, which will be fixed beginning next week, so now he is living with hope, not fear.
