Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

Today I am grateful that I'm feeling better after a few days of dealing with either a stomach bug or the aftermath of my ordeal with taking a medication that caused stomach bleeding. Whichever it is - today I'm feeling better, it's sunny, and I'm going to enjoy the spring day. I'm also going to read back over all the gratitudes I missed here and I know that will make me feel even better. Hope you all have a great day!

@debbraw Debbra, I am so glad you are feeling better. Enjoy the day. It's fairly nice here in NH too. It's about 50degrees here, and slightly overcast, but I'll take it.
We hope to move in the not too distant future to a smaller place, preferably one with an HOA. So today, I need to start organizing and throwing stuff out. Such a daunting task after living in a house for 30 years.

@hopeful33250 Teresa, HOA is "Home Owners Association". It's "condos" that are actually detached homes, and you pay a fee monthly, HOA, and your outside and some other things are maintained for you, so that's a worry you don't have.

@contentandwell Got it, thanks!

How big is the detached condo that you are thinking about?

@hopeful33250 We need to have enough room to accommodate our son and daughter when they visit, so we can't go too small. We are just browsing now to see what is around. We will probably be looking at something with two bedrooms, three would be ideal, and approximately 2000 square feet. We are in a four bedroom home now, with about 3000 square feet, and two acres of land. NH is a lot more reasonable than many other areas of the country so homes tend to be larger here. If we could somehow rearrange rooms to put the MBR on the first floor we would consider staying here, but with the layout of our home that would be virtually impossible, and that's very important to my husband.

@hopeful33250 Thanks, Teresa. I hope we get moving better on this home so we can put it on the market in May. I would love to move to the town just south of Manchester. It's not as nice a town as ours so my husband is not enthused about that, but it would shorten the drive to MGH a bit, and I think I will be going to MGH forever, and yet it would still be close to my health club which I love. One town south of that is a nicer town, comparable to where we are now, but it makes the distance to my health club longer, and if you have to drive too far you tend to not go as much.
