Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

@lioness My mother was basically mute the last four years. She would respond to the dog that sometimes came with the visiting nurse, that's all. A photo taken 3 months before her passing shows her in a very pretty gown, staring vacantly into the camera.

@gingerw - What you said about the picture of your mother really reminded me of a photo my aunt sent me this last week of my 98-year-old great aunt, who lives many states away from me. She was sitting at a table in a pretty gown at a memory care facility in which she recently started residing, staring off vacantly. She has Alzheimer's and has not recognized her own son for the past two years.

I'm grateful she has lived a full life with many friends and family who have cared greatly about her.

@lisalucier My dad took care of my mother until the last 10 days, when she stopped eating. She never would have agreed to a picture of her in a robe, no matter how elegant. Thank you for sharing your memory.

@gingerw The last several years of my Mom,s life she spent in the same nursing home I worked at it was an Alz. Unit but when us nurses would take our brake Mom would be right there ,at night ,she was up all night ,all the nurses there loved her ,then at the end she stopped eating and talking. But I am grateful for those memories .Im trying to do everything I can so my son won't have to go through this.

Dang! I have been so busy today I have not had time to be grateful - nor to read one post! I'm just checking in to say I have completed my New England Seafood Casserole, wild rice with mushrooms, asparagus, and for dessert, bourbon cake. Ya'll wish me luck! My little dinner party is starting in one hour.

Well - I survived all that cooking - and it all turned out great! Also, my kitchen is now back to it's pre-dinner-party status - dishes cleaned and put away. So for all that I am grateful. I also appreciate all of you cheering me on. It was a fun evening. Our guests were two of my husband's boyhood friends and their wives. The guys are all in their 70's and they had fun reminiscing about the pranks and mischief they got into when they were young.

Oh - yes - I'm also very grateful that today I can rest and do nothing! Hope its a restful kind of day for all of us.

Today I am grateful (once again!) for our group of Gratitude connectors! You all give each day a silver lining. @debbraw, it was great to hear the success of your dinner gathering. Precious memories for sure.
We have finished my little sitting area outside, just the basics. Husband will build in a rain gutter, we'll be putting in more pea gravel, and I will move some of my plants there.
