Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

I'm trying to tag everyone here. If I miss anyone, I will be very GRATEFUL - if you tag them so they come over here! @hopeful33250, @providence1960, @jodeej, @damlady2, @gingerw, @snagulpuss, @sarah49, @reenj62, @dorisa, @marilyncko. All welcome to join.

@dorisa I am agreeing with Teresa, you are NOT horrible at this. You are a role model for me in reminding myself to keep things simple. Your story of calming your mom down was just amazing. My heart was going out to you. What an ordeal. I'm glad they are keeping her overnight - if nothing else it takes some pressure off you! Prayers that your mom has an uneventful night and you have a restful one!

I am greatful for having a calm & relaxing evening, since my day has not gone very well.

I try to start my day by thanking God for all I have (left) and by doing at least one kindness to/for someone else. Examples are checking on a neighbor, sending a get well card, emailing someone I know is grieving, calling someone who has been ill, offering to go to the post office for a friend who no longer drives, etc. I also make it a point to be friendly a d upbeat to all cashiers in stores.

Well done! I love this post. Today, I am thankful that my husbands flu subsided and that my sister is here to visit from Denver (and hopefully she doesn't get the flu too. yikes!).

@capausz - I LOVE your addition to techniques. You are taking it one step further. Not just feeling the gratitude but paying it forward. Great suggestions. Thanks. And @reenj62 - I hear you. Sometimes a calm moment - or evening - is all we get. Hope your day goes better tomorrow. Finally, @jamienolson - my son lives in Denver! Enjoy your sister visit!! And enjoy your husband's reprieve from the flu... if he's anything like my husband that certainly gives you a break! Hope its okay to put this all here together. I just didn't want to bombard people's message feed.

@karolyn - I cannot agree more. I am so thankful for all of the little ones in my life. They kind of put things in perspective. You are being a true example of the attitude of gratitude. With all you are going through, you took a moment to be thankful for your children and grands! Hope all goes well with your physical/infection issues.
