Removal of plate and screws from tibia fracture

Posted by tc125 @tc125, Oct 30, 2018

Hello, I broke my tibia in April 2018 and had surgery to insert a plate and 9 screws. I have pain walking every day all day. The surgeon has recommended having the plate/screws removed. I am reluctant to do it because the surgeon said he can't guarantee the pain will be gone. I'm not sure if it would be worth it to have incisions, remove screws, slide the plate out, have anesthesia and get stitched back up. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this type of surgery and if so, was it worth it.

@jenniferhunter I've been following post and sounds like your healing I have a suggestion if you go back to boot put a soft cloth on both sides of your ankle that may help ,

@lioness The boot does have soft padding inside. It also has a hard shield on the front that bends at the ankle, so I tried it without that and it didn't help. I thought it was hitting me at the fracture point and it was held on by velcro. I could try a washcloth or something like that and see if it helps. I think it is the weight pulling on and rubbing the most sensitive places that hurts. My leg is pretty weak too and no muscle tone in my calf so the boot seems heavy to me. I couldn't see my calf move at all when I flexed it until just the other day. It has just a slight movement now probably from the weight bearing I have been doing. Recovery is slow.

@jenniferhunter What ever you can do to help ,that's all I can suggest if it's in the front might help a soft padding of some kind just does take a long time

@red3 I was supposed to be in the boot until September. I don't walk much and mostly just park on the couch. I think the orthotics do the most for me in supporting my foot properly and I had them inside the boot. If I was to twist my ankle, it would probably be bad and the boot would prevent that. I am walking so slow and carefully and looking at where I am stepping that I don't think I will do that. I'm not walking normally, really just like there is still a cast on my ankle. Being able to put the injured foot on the floor sure helps with balance too. My surgeon wants me to be able to walk without crutches when I come back in Sept and increase the weight on my foot each week. I should be at 50 % now. Without the boot, I think I can do that, but with it, it hurts too much. There is a delay of a few minutes before the pain starts, but then it won't stop.

I see, very long recovery. I’ve discovered a game on my smartphone called Wordscapes...it’s a lot of fun. After I had my surgery I downloaded the public library app on my phone so I could listen to audiobooks. I really enjoy this. These are suggestions to pass the time if you don’t already do them.

@lioness Oh, I'm so sorry. I haven't been reading my messages very well because there are so many of them that I get. Bless Your heart. It must be miserable
You got a fracture and you are just about like me. It takes time to heal and I don't have patients. My husband catches me bending, or twisting a little bit and he tells me about it. He is now doing everything, Cooking, washing, tying my shoes when I go for a walk. He wants me to work on not bending and twisting, because I have soft bones and could break a rod or pull out a screw. I go back to Mayo in October. My They x-ray to make sure all is ok and then I see the surgeon. I still have some pain, but off of all pain pills and take tylenol that does nothing.
I feel so bad for you and I do remember that you fell I just didn't know it was so bad. Take care my dear and I will think and pray for you.

That is great to hear. Glad it worked for you. I had mine removed two weeks ago and the pain is gone. Just have to recover from this surgery. Two surgeries in 1 year is enough for me.

@quiteachiver75 My daughter was coming off her horse and sprained her ankle the horse step on it. She had a compound Tibia, which they f ixed that night, that was last Tuesday. They also fixed her ankle that was out. Tomorrow she has her second surgery to fix the tibula and screws and I don't know what else, her tibula was also fractured. They will clean it out real good. It's been the pits we can't see her, but I will be able to see her before surgery and after surgery. Please pray for her if you do so.
