Art for Healing

Posted by Harriet Hodgson @harriethodgson1, Oct 26, 2018

Kudos to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art for allowing physicians to write prescriptions for free admission to the museum. And kudos to Mayo Clinic for its art program. From the beginning, Mayo Clinic believed that art can uplift patients and foster healing. Whether it's Rochester, Jacksonville or Scottsdale, Mayo Clinic displays a wide range of artwork for patients. The Rochester site published a brochure for a self-guided tour of artwork. I live in Rochester and every time I'm at Mayo, I take the time to look at the artwork.

Actually @lioness it’s not a painting. It’s made of fabric. Finding the right fabric is half the battle! Need to start on his sisters face today.

@parus, @jenniferhunter,, @healthytoday, @becsbuddy, @veteranspouseinpain, @gingerw, @harriethodgson1, and anyone that I neglected to mention-

My thoughts were turned to this discussion "Art for Healing" and naturally all of you, who have so generously shared some of your art along with the connectedness to your health history. I want to invite you to drop in and tell us how you are doing? Has the recent isolation form the coronavirus affecte your creativity? What have you created lately? What is your inspiration?

As for myself, I have done some sewing and finished a sundress for my grandaughter. She loves it and told me that she gets dizzy when she twirls in it. Today , with shoes and polished toenails, she wore it to church.

@rosemarya The life of an artist who works alone at home is about the same with or without stay at home orders and a pandemic. What is different is all of the outside connections like shows that were canceled or ended early because of business closures, and I'm not able to go to a group artist model session at a friend's studio because we would gather around one model and put our easels right next to each other. Artists are affected a lot when there is no physical show and the public cannot attend opening parties. Some places are now going ahead with shows, and I just shipped a couple paintings out, but all the shows I've been in this year have been affected with limited access for people to see the shows.

My inspiration usually comes from something I experience, and I was out on a horse trail riding trip and taking photos and video and got hurt a month ago, so my attention lately has been toward healing a broken ankle and I haven't been able to paint. I just returned to Mayo for a follow up with my surgeon and got the first splint/cast removed and now have a fiberglass cast. I picked green because I wanted to paste horse pictures on it when I got home. The nurses came back with some printed horse pictures that I cut out and we pasted on as they cast my ankle. That was after we talked about horses and she showed me pictures of her paint horse on her phone. I am going to need to work on this cast some more and put my own horse on it too. Having a cast is kind of a love/hate relationship, so fun pictures should help. I did get a lot of attention as I passed others at Mayo for the horse pictures on my cast. That is art for healing literally....

I also completed editing a video of me painting the portrait for my spine surgeon that shows almost the entire process of completing the painting. It was recorded in real time, but in editing , I cut and spliced to remove all the time when my brush was not moving, and sped it up about ten times. It is a time lapse set to music that is 39 minutes long. I have been inspired by my own healing through art and it gave me a new purpose to my work. I'm working on a new project with that in mind to tell art inspired stories. Personally, the challenges I have faced in my medical issues have inspired me to use my art creatively toward healing and to want to teach others ways to do this for themselves through creativity.

@rosemarya Having been social isolating even more during the COVID-19 uprising I have become a bit more daring with my creativity. To help with stress reduction I have started doing some larger works. Also doing some slapdash acrylics which really gives me an opportunity to be more daring. Finding I like this newer part of me that has started to emerge. I also have become daring with sourdough recipes which has mysteriously appeared around my middle.

@parus Here in town, they got a weekly event started, and home bakers are some who vend there. I cannot bring myself to trust people I don't know, making something going in my mouth, when it is not a certified kitchen. But my husband got a loaf of garlic and herb sourdough bread from the lady who owns the coffeehouse, and declared it really good.

@gingerw Totally understand about the baked goods caution. At your request I am attaching the watercolor "If wishes were horses beggars would ride". this painting is an older one (2013). It is 19.5" x 21". Have you finished with your rock garden? I did get some flowers going in containers. Not as many this year. It will suffice and helps me to enjoy my morning coffee even more.
I have been doing a lot of creating and also going on daily walks for a break from the creative process and myself. I have these episodes of getting on my own nerves. There are several sweet pea vines blooming in the field across the way. Smells divine. I picked a bouquet to bring home.
Hey, even chopping veggies can be an art!! I am encouraged and inspired by the many ways others here are being creative.
