Ablation Success

Posted by iowafemale @iowafemale, Oct 12, 2018

I am just wondering how successful people have found ablations. I have had two, the second having lasted three years now. I don't know if there is data about how long the ablations usually "hold." I've been told that 50% of people are back in a-fib after five years. Also, are there people who have had numerous ablations? Just curious about the experiences of others. When I had a-fib I was very symptomatic.

another question for you...if this procedure does not work again....then I for sure need to move on to a more highly experienced doc. mayo was one of the first places I looked(choose instead one of the larger hospitals in central flavor with a reasonably accomplished heart group... ...geting an appointment at mayo seems tough...and if I have to do a round three I will want the best....is there some connection via our group that can facilitate getting a appointment with a highly experienced ectrophsyiologist to deal with what by then will be a complex case....(would likely be for a round three)...have heard lead times are quite lonG...can anyone help?

Thanks for your posting. I had an ablation back in 2010. Successful for only about a year. I have mitral valve regurgitation and a mitral clip. I have had 6 procedures done at Mayo. I was in afib 24/7. The last procedure was on Sep 28, a cardioversion. For a week I felt very good. I saw my cardiologist on October 23. I am back in afib 24/7. I have emailed Mayo but have not heard. They will contact me. I don't know what the next step will be. My Cardiologist where I live said, "You are in great health. All your blood work is normal. Your kidneys, liver, are all normal. We just gotta get this mitral valve fixed." I have great faith and trust in the Cardiology Dept. at Mayo. They have done well for me. It's a great clinic; the best. Don't give up; I'm not.

thanks for your feedback...am trying to get an appointment with them...apparently not so easy...jacksonville was not offering appointments for 6 months!

unfortunately my ablation failed early(first 2 months)....I am supposedly a "low risk" case, in good shape, paroxysmal, no co-morbidities but doc obviously had some challenges I guess getting the catheter positioned properly....hopefully round two has better results, but would like to take advantage of Mayo's vast experience and skill....

Hi @kai. It sounds like you are interested in possibly explore Mayo Clinic should you require further ablation care. Of course, we wish you all the best of luck in this second ablation you are coming up on in a couple days.

However, to answer your question, Connect is not able to expedite scheduling of appointments, however, if ever interested, you can use the contact information on this form to request an appointment at Mayo Clinic http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63. They will review your medical records and history, and discuss with you treatment options.

Please keep us posted following this up-coming ablation and how you are doing. Do you feel prepared?

My second ablation has been successful for just shy of five years so far. I do not regret it for a minute. I was highly symptomatic and they discovered atypical atrial flutter which was corrected by the second ablation as well. Received excellent care at Mayo. Dr. Munger was absolutely wonderful and I learned on my dismissal from the hospital that they had used a new piece of equipment - I was their first using a new probe. Again, excellent place! My appointment was scheduled out for several months, but I found that calling to see if there were any cancellations on a weekly basis got me moved up twice.

I have a mechanical aortic valve and permanent Atrial Fib for almost 30 years. Shortly after the surgery I developed Afib. After 7 cardioversions (the longest lasted about 2 years and the shortest 2 days) both my cardiologist and I agreed not to pursue that any further. So an ablation was decided. Because I am on a blood thinner (Warfarin) as I'm a high risk for a stroke I was a few days in the hospital to replace the warfarin with heparin, so there would be no blood thinner in my body during the actual procedure, which was unsuccessful. To bring the INR up to the required level again to between 2.5 and 3.5 (in Canadian numbers) I was about 5 days in the hospital. No second ablation was ever suggested and I learned to live with the permanent Afib which of course limits my physical activity quite a bit. Are there any other people in this discussion group who have a similar experience?

@kai Hi I see lots of feedback and ill just add that my second ablation with the same EP Cardiologist was much better than the first so I hope that helps. I wasn't an afib case mine was Ventricular Tachycardia so im not as familiar with how Ablations go with that particular problem. I can say also when it came to being referred to Mayo it was my EP Cardiologist at the time that referred me so im not sure of the process as an individual. So good luck tomorrow and rest assured that now your Doctor has some more background on your case and probably has a good plan on how to address it. I know in my case that was a benefit.

thanks... definitely feel prepared...maybe have read too much on this, trying to understand why the first one didn't work considering I did not present as a complicated case...the doc seems confident... so hopefully this one has a better outcome..

Well, I started this post two years ago. Five years ago today, I had my second ablation and my heart appears to be still in sinus rhythm! Kudos to Dr. Munger and team and thank you for making me feel so much better!!
