Good Morning,
Yes, I do need the pain meds.
I didn't expect this recovery to be as painful as it has been because my previous surgery was not too bad.
My hubby will go along with whatever is best for me.
Knowing him, he will just keep a closer eye on me and what I am doing.

Happy to hear that you are taking your pain medications as prescribed by your surgeon. You don't need to be in that kind of pain! You'll feel better soon I'm sure. Take care. I always respect your positive attitude even when you are struggling with pain.

Happy Sunday!
Monday I had my x-lift spinal surgery on L3/4.
It has been a harder and more painful recovery than when I had my disc replacement on C5/6.
Here is my question:
My doc gave me a stronger pain killer than I had for the first surgery and stronger than I have on hand (just in case).
When I was in the hospital, I was given the pain meds as prescribed.
It kept me comfortable with livable pain.

I know I have an addictive personality.
My drug of choice has always been food.
That is why I needed weight loss surgery.
I am in a pickle.
Should I take as many that is allowed (as long as I need it)?
Should I play it safe and and take 1 in the am and 1 in the pm (as long as I need it)?
Should I continue to take just 1 in the pm to make me comfortable enough to sleep?

I just don't know.
I am really concerned about additiction.
Any and all help will be appreciated!

I have a great pain management team and they tell me that as long as you’re taking meds to manage pain, you are not at risk for addiction. You can be dependent due to chemicals, but that is different than addicted. There is so much shame be at the media for those of us who do depend on pain meds to be able to function, try not to let that define you. Best of luck in your healing journey.

@ckeys
Thank you for your post.
I had a long talk with my neuro nurse practitioner.
I'm one of those who was afraid of becoming addicted to pain meds and as a result, I was underutilizing them.
My pain became unbearable.
I was told to stay ahead of the pain by taking my pain meds.
She said as the pain eases up, I will find that I don't need them as often and will begin to lower the dose naturally.
She also said that the team will keep a close eye on me.
Sadly, however, the first day I took all the meds worked great.
It hasn't been the same since.
As a matter of fact I actually took one in the middle of the night, last night, because I couldn't sleep.
The pain was so bad.
We'll see how today goes.
I pray for a better day.

Here's to a pain free day for us all....

@ckeys I ran out of pain pills and the doctor had miscounted how many should be in scrip. She wanted me to break them in half and one half every 6 hours. She only gave me 30 pills. I have had it with asking for help. I am leaving the University doctors. I am not a pin cushion. I am sick and I need help. They have no idea what to do with me. Now I started the Kratom and have not needed a pain pill since. I mean it guys. It has not hurt me and won't. My son had brain surgery and uses it. I am so sick of telling doctors I hurt. tears in my eyes. And then told to break the pills in half. I refuse to get hooked on the doctors. As far as I am concerned, they are forgetting their oath. I have serious RA and endless pain in addition now they see Multiple Myloma coming on the scene. I need a REAL doctor, not a student. I think the doctors today need to read their oath again. Do you trust them? No really do you?

@oregongirl That would be 15 days of pills, at one half every 6 hrs. Was that what she was writing it for? If not, she should be able to call in for more at the end of that period. I learned long ago to be a squeaky wheel, and advocate hard for myself without making enemies along the way.

@oregongirl have you gone to Mayo? You sound like you should The Drs there are really good and should be able to help you . If I had what you do I would go to a bigger hospital out here it is UCLA but is Az to far for you to go to Mayo there? I do agree these days the new Drs have a lot to be desired for one thing they aren't schooled in nutrition

@oregongirl I would fire any doctor that I didn't trust and I have done that. I have also sat down and said I am not getting what I need from them and had improved results. Multiple myeloma can be painful as well as life threatening and that on top of RA makes you a complicated case. I agree about University doctors, but they often have some of the leading treatment options and you can also ask not to be treated by residents. It sounds like you need a good Rheumatologist and a pain management doctor and possibly a hematologist/oncologist. If it were me, I would be seeking out a reputable healthcare organization than can provide all three. Any doctor who can't write a correct script is problematic. And one who is not meeting your needs even worse. I know that with opiates you can't call in a refill, it has to be written so that's truly a hassle. I am not sure what part of Oregon you live in, but I hear OHSU is very good. My aunt lives in Bend and has RA and loves her rheumatologist ~ she is also taking Humira which has helped with her flares. I am in Seattle area and here I love Swedish Hospital. Have your tried medical canibis or CBD Oil without THC? Some people have good luck with pain relief, especially night time with this. Best of luck to you. Keep demanding the care you need or find an advocate who can help you...this can be better and it's your life.
