Hi, I found out my late brother had HCM so I have a 50% chance of also having it, since I saw the Genetic people who explained this I have been having slight chest pains, like a muscle pain. I am booked into the hospital next week for an ECG and Echo cardiogram so as yet I haven't been diagnosed with anything, I did used to have palpitations but the doctors said it was anxiety and proscribed Propanalol which I understand is also used for HCM?

Any advise please?

Thanks.

Hello,
I have lived with HCM for over 40 years now. When I first was diagnosed with the disease, I was prescribed Propanolol (Inderal) - which is a Beta Blocker and helps control heart rhythm. I was on that drug for about 8 years until a new drug, Verapamil was released. For the past 35 years, I have been prescribed Verapamil - which is a Calcium Channel Blocker and relaxes blood vessels so blood can flow more freely and reduce the effort needed by the heart. More recently I have also been prescribed Metropolol, which is a different type of Beta Blocker that helps with chest pains.
I wish you the best.

@conbrue, could you share a few details? Has the Propranolol helped with the palpitations? May I ask if you found out more information after the ECG/Echo?
