Sinemet

I’ve been on Sinemet since the 14th of August. My doctor is having me slowly increase the dosage until I am up to 2 pills three times a day which will be in three weeks. My symptoms have disappeared and my pain is significantly better except at night. Then it is not as bad as it was, but it is still not good. Long story short, I am having trouble with nausea, usually a short time after I have eaten. I am religiously taking my pills then waiting 1 1/2 to 2 hours before eating. Then I eat and wait 4 to 5 hours before eating again. I’m not throwing up, but I just feel nauseous a lot of the time. Is this a symptom that gets better over time? Has anyone had or still experiencing the same problem? I also feel like I’m getting the flu from time to time. It never lasts, but when it happens it is again usually at night. I appreciate any input.

Hello @susan62

Maybe you are waiting too long before eating. I have heard that 30 minutes is enough time. Where did you hear about the 1 1/2 to 2 hours?

I have also heard that taking Sinemet with a sugary drink (orange juice or coke) will put it into your system quicker than water.

My husband has been on Sinemet for 2.5 years. He takes (currently) 2.5 tabs 5-6 times per day. About 1 year ago he started experiencing daily nausea in the morning after his first morning meds. He used to take his meds as soon as he woke and started his day - before eating. As the daily nausea developed, we assumed the meds on an empty stomach (taken with water or orange juice) were likely causing his stomach upset, so he started adding some food first - a small amount of yogurt or cottage cheese, a glass of milk, and he has discontinued orange juice and coffee altogether. He starts the day with dairy products because we thought it might coat his stomach and help reduce acid production. This has had no effect. Poor guy gets nauseous no matter what, and has to take a nap before he feels well enough to get up and get going. Suggestions?

Hi @dianalee,

As you have been a caregiver for someone with PD for quite some time, have you ever come up with the nausea issue related to Sinemet?

If so, how has it been handled for your PD patient?
