Anyone take Lyrica for fibromyalgia and pain?

Posted by mmak @mmak, Jul 19, 2018

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a few weeks back after a long journey of pain and uncertainty for 29 years. It looks like I also suffer from social anxiety disorder(this I just see from the symptoms I have, not yet diagnosed). Now my Doctor has prescribed Lyrica, I have been reading up on its reviews and most of them are very scary, has anyone used it before or are using it, please advise on it.

I have been taking Lyrica 75mg twice per day for 3 months for chronic pain in my thigh, groin and hip.I can only walk on crutches and can't sit but have to lay down. I take loads of pills for my blood (warfarin due to Aortic valve replacement + clopiwin due to 5 strokes) for anxiety (urbanol) for depression (cillift) etc. I am terrified of what Lyrica can do to me and tried to reduce the dosage by not taking my evening dose. 2 hours later I was screaming with pain. How can I get off this please? I have been to 5 different doctors - in the beginning they say they will fix me and in the end they say - stay on Lyrica. I am in so much pain but they can't up my dose cos of kidneys and I don't want them too. I am allergic to so many things from aspirin, penicillin, ibuprofen, codeine etc so there is very little they can give me. BUT I can't stand the pain! Any suggestions please???

Personally I think Lyrica is a horrible drug but that’s only my opinion and that of a few others.
I filed a complaint with FDA because of muscle side effects. My arm was paralyzed for over an hour.
I’m curious if your taking it for pain and it’s not helping why are your doctors insistent you continue it.
If your Kidneys are impaired I would certainly take as few medications as possible. Lyrica is an Anti-seizure medication and needs to be stopped slowly but if you don’t have a seizure disorder maybe you can stop quicker or all at once but check with your doctor before and how to quit.
Good luck!!!

It seems there is an assumption being made that natural products don't have any side effects and won't harm you. One example, many people find having bees sting them over their joints is very helpful with some types of arthritis and prefer this treatment because it is a quote on quote natural treatment. However some folks given one or two bee stings will go into anaphylactic shock and require immediate treatment to save their lives. Natural treatments are chemicals of one kind or another

@wsh66 Do your research on bees ,don't take anyone,s advice or do it cause it helped them ,it course it you have a known allergy you aren't going to do it.The sun ,water are natural ,herbal medicine comes from plants but you need to research that product just like medicine the Dr gives you if the side effects are in that slip the pharmacy gives you Research what your taking.

I'm sorry you are in such great pain. Fibro makes my legs hurt terribly. Frankly, I'd be wheelchair bound without Lyrica and Oxycodone. The Lyrica helps so much with the muscle and nerve pain.
You say that taking Lyrica has helped with your pain but you are afraid of what it will do. Can you tell me what specifically you are fearful of? Did you have a bad experience with Lyrica or is it the possibility of what could occur from others experience? I imagine having allergic reactions to so many things must be troubling.
I had a bad experience on another drug and became unnerved. I questioned everything I put in my mouth. I convinced myself that I was having a reaction to a drug I had taken for years. It got so bad that just swallowing it sent me into a panic. Long story short-- I spoke with a counselor who helped me get to the root of the problem.

As a young man I was a salesman selling 1,100 herbs and herbal preparations. The company I worked for had access to one of the best naturopaths alive at that time. A lot of them came with some serious warnings for side affects. Your right about research. I have little patience for the attitude that if it come from a drug company, it must be bad. I'm not saying that's you but I have encountered it on these sites.

@wsh66 , Well, I have to say that Lyrica was a life saver for me. I've had Fibromyalgia most of my life, but was diagnosed at the UAB Kirklin Clinic in 1990. I have been on Cymbalta forever. But that wasn't enough. I changed my schedule, my attitude, my diet and taking certain supplements. Then a Tsunami of a Fibro Flare bowled me over. I upped my supplements, started drinking water with electrolytes, and my Speciaist finally gave me Lyrica. I did get more intrusive thoughts of grief and depression. Whether that's connected with Lyrica side effects or not, I am much better off. Even if I had to go back to a low dose of Wellbutrin, it was worth it. I do think it is important to keep a record of one's reactions to drugs, herbs, supplements of any kind. And it is vitally important to always include your medical team in any decision regarding your heath. Adjustments need to be only with full cooperation of all partie. Only with accurate, complete disclosure can proper treatment occur. You are wise to take all of these things seriously. I look forward to more discussions on this topic of interest!

@michellerog1 , I am so sorry that you are in so much pain from Fibromyalgia. I was diagnosed in 1990, and I managed to work until about three years ago. I couldn't bear to work any longer. I was hobbling down the halls and holding on to desks and tables to get from one place to another. My doctor wouldn't give me anything for pain other than Cymbalta and Ibuprohen, which did not work. I finally have pain relief with Lyrica. I will be careful, however, and try not to get dependent on a higher dosage than what I have now. I'd rather not have to take anything at all. Wouldn't we all?
