Thinking of training for 5k

Posted by ihatediabetes @ihatediabetes, Jul 18, 2018

Hi everyone, I have been off connect for awhile. Got email invite from Colleen to engage on connect. Well I have become an expert uber driver since have been gone. Its nice to get out and make airports runs and other trips. Keeps me busy. Well I have been thinking of training for a 5k. The Twin Cities Marathon is a few months away and there are shorter races the day before the marathon. There are half mile, mile, 5k, and 10k races. So I have been playing with the idea of running the 1 mile or 5k race. I have never run a real race before. But I am thinking about it.

@ihatediabetes, I’m so glad you started this discussion. I “ran” my first 5k last year. While I’m proud of myself, there were speed walkers who finished faster than I did. LOL. Never mind, I did it! Do I like running? Not yet. But I’m still doing it. Like you, @ginaquilts, I find running a bit boring, although I don’t mind walking. That’s odd, isn’t it?

I’m a walk, run, walk type runner. I followed John Stanton’s method of running from his book “Running: The Complete Guide To Building Your Running Program”
https://www.amazon.com/Running-Complete-Guide-Building-Program/dp/0143176099
According to his method, you never run for longer than 10 minute segments, followed by 1 minute. That made it easier for me.

IHateDiabetes, I’m envious that you have a whole team of people helping you get ready. Is your race this Saturday? As in tomorrow? All the best. Can’t wait to hear how you do.

Oh my, I wish that were true. I am just now starting to get back into shape. I haven't been able to dance for nearly two years due to medical malpractice. My PCP at a large HMO in Northern California insisted she could handle everything and wouldn't make referrals to specialists. A raging kidney infection went on for nearly two months, causing a lot of nerve damage, including balance problems. Even though I was told the nerve damage was irreversible, fortunately most of it has resolved and I'm ready to test my dancing shoes once again. (Doing a happy dance!)

I have great faith in the power of careful exercise and physical therapy to rehabilitate us. You will soon be dancing in the streets.

I started practicing my run walking in our local field house. I have punch card from city. I went around four times today. That's about one mile.

Hi everyone, I am still kind of training for my 5k. I can slow jog around the field house 4 times. That's about 1 mile on artificial turf. I got a punch card so I can walk/run at the field house perimeter. I am driving to California now trying to get daughter settled at college for fall semester. I am trying to eat healthy. I made a big salad at whole foods in Lincoln, Nebraska. Its way better than fast food for supper.

Looks good @ihatediabetes. I have just moved house and last night I joined the nearby gym. I'll give it a go for a month but really I enjoy walking outdoors more. The gym will be good for my upper body though.

I think having a trainer is really good for me. I see one after I go through my program 12 times however long that takes. Then she changes my program. So I do different exercises for arms legs abs balance and core. I know that its helping me to change body composition. I am gradually getting higher lean body mass and less fat mass. I did DEXA scans twice at healthy living center.

Hi everyone, I took a screenshot of the shorter races the weekend of Twin Cities Marathon. The Marathon is Sunday. The shorter races are Saturday October 7. I signed up for the 5k race. There are also half and one mile races that start and end at state capitol. I am still pretty nervous about it but I drove the route and jogged a little portion of it. People can still sign up. I think people can even sign up the day of the races. I took a screenshot of the part that I jogged yesterday. I did 1.75mi at 20 min pace. So that's really really slow jogging but I was trying to keep my legs moving and bouncing in a jogging motion. I am aching today but glad I made it out there. Maybe other's might want to sign up. I think the one mile would be fun too. That's called the family mile race.

Looks like a lot of fun. I's still walking and signed up to nearby gym. The trainer told me that an elderly woman with diabetes got her levels down to normal by doing the workouts he devised!

That sounds wonderful. I hope to get my a1c down from jogging. I read somewhere that slow jogging is the best for diabetes. My goal for the 5k is to slow jog the route in an hour. I have been going to group physical fitness at the mayo building in Minneapolis. We meet at 545am. The trainer put my on the treadmill and changes speed and adds incline up and down. I thought I needed more training help because I didn't know how to train for 5k and not get injured. So I feel better having a trainer. My 5k race is in October.
