Adults On The Autism Spectrum

Posted by Mamacita, Alumna Mentor @mamacita, Apr 29, 2018

Maybe you were really shy as a child. Perhaps you took home a huge stack of books from the school library, read them, and returned them the next day. Or did your best friend find you crying in your closet, unable to answer the question "Why?" At any rate, your life could be traced to the Self-Help section of the local bookstore. Unfortunately, most of the books were not much help. ADHD seemed to fit, at times. Your shrink said you might be Bi-Polar, although she wasn't really certain. All you knew was that you rarely fit in, anywhere. One day at work, it hit you square in the face: I don't speak these people's language! Really, it was like you were all playing this game, and everyone knew the rules but you. You couldn't tell a joke, and you never "got" any joke your co-worker tried to tell you. People started getting annoyed with you, because you had a memory like a steel trap. They didn't appreciate it when you called them on the carpet. Who knew? This was my life, and worse. I finally aced several tests that pointed me to the answer to my questions. The Autism Spectrum. Guess what? Little kids with Autism grow up to be Adults with Autism. Diagnosed late in life? This is the place for you!

Can anyone relate? I am home, sweet home....glad to be here. Enjoying getting back into my routine. And the catalogue that I have been telling you all about is still missing in action.

I know it is here somewhere. Where is Marie Kondo when you need her? I have been uncluttering for months. Literally months. Ah ha! Now I remember. I took it with me to New Mexico! So it has to be in one of my bags! I remember sharing it with at least four people....

Whew!!! There is light at the end of the tunnel! I am out running errands with the significant other. But when I return, I hopefully (keep your fingers crossed ) will have all the information I need for you to acquire these books.

If you are not interested in purchasing these books, that's perfectly fine. There is a wealth of information in each one. We gladly share here.

Love and hugs, miss you much! Auties and allies, we are better together!

Ginger, Volunteer Mentor, a part of you went to New Mexico with us. It is a constant reminder that in spite of seeming obstacles that get in our way. there is indeed "joy in the journey."

Thank you for the concern, compassion, and genuine helpfulness that you show each day to this wonderful community.

Love and light, dear friend.

Good evening,(morning?) @sirgalahad. Hope you are doing well. Working hard, helping those little children.
Supporting the Autism Community. Sharing information. Promoting effective communication between Auties and Allies.
Busy man. But not too busy to help change the world. One person at a time. As it has been said, there remains these three: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Love and light,

Happy Tuesday everyone!!! I found the catalogue! Yay! Now, many of you can relate to what I am about to say.

With super sensitivies, Autistics find that they are in a state of constant anxiety. Not all, but many. We get so used to being anxious about everything that we don't even recognise anxiety until it is pointed out to us.

With superior, off the charts hearing, I routinely have to wear special ear plugs to drown out the constant noise of society around me. Some Auties wear special ear protectors, even to shop. I am entirely too observant, so I tend to wear sunglasses where ever I can get away with it. I sit towards the front at church, so I don't pick up information through body language from other parishioners.

My sense of smell is very strong. I am driven to have my house so clean that it smells really, really clean...all the time. Same thing with self care. I don't mind getting dirty, from working in the yard, or whatever. But you must know that I will be showering and using a ton of products to take care of this body. To keep it in top notch condition!

My clothing must be soft and comfortable. My style is rather bohemian, and I probably look like an anthropology professor. I used to worry about what I wore. Afraid I would be judged. I don't worry about that any more. There are much more interesting things to feel passionate about.

Anxiety untreated can kill you. Raise your blood pressure and make you have a stroke. This is why I want to talk about the subject of anxiety. The different ways it is expressed. How to recognize it. How to help someone with anxiety. How to help yourself realize when Burn out is on the horizon. Or shutdowns.

There is a new book out this year and it is called The Autism Discussion Page On Stress, Anxiety, Shutdowns and Meltdowns. By Bill Nason. I believe it will be an effective tool to help us understand how to navigate the special moments in life when we have challenges to understand and overcome

I plan to purchase this book and share my findings with you, my Autism and Allies Family. In the meantime, feel free to drop in to the Spectrum Cafe and relax awhile. Let's talk about our trips this summer, the good food we have prepared, the wonderful people we have met. Let's do life together! I'm glad you are here!
