Adults On The Autism Spectrum

Posted by Mamacita, Alumna Mentor @mamacita, Apr 29, 2018

Maybe you were really shy as a child. Perhaps you took home a huge stack of books from the school library, read them, and returned them the next day. Or did your best friend find you crying in your closet, unable to answer the question "Why?" At any rate, your life could be traced to the Self-Help section of the local bookstore. Unfortunately, most of the books were not much help. ADHD seemed to fit, at times. Your shrink said you might be Bi-Polar, although she wasn't really certain. All you knew was that you rarely fit in, anywhere. One day at work, it hit you square in the face: I don't speak these people's language! Really, it was like you were all playing this game, and everyone knew the rules but you. You couldn't tell a joke, and you never "got" any joke your co-worker tried to tell you. People started getting annoyed with you, because you had a memory like a steel trap. They didn't appreciate it when you called them on the carpet. Who knew? This was my life, and worse. I finally aced several tests that pointed me to the answer to my questions. The Autism Spectrum. Guess what? Little kids with Autism grow up to be Adults with Autism. Diagnosed late in life? This is the place for you!

she and the family have been involved with her breast cancer for 20 years and this is her 4th op and she went down the path of natural therapies medicine and herbalism and TM MEDITATION .I WAS IMPLORING HER TO GO THE CONVENTIONAL ROUTE AND USING ALSO TARGETTED RADIO IUMMNIOTHERAPY AND RADIOISTOPES WHICH CAN TRACK AND TARGET CANCER CELLS .Sorriest didn't mean to yell my apologies and I wanted her to do the western regime to knock down the cancer cells and she could follow up with the natural therapies and herbalism . I knows she has lashed out quite a lot at me and its been that way for along time and saying its unfair I have never had cancer . but I accept my lot and will send her hugs from a distance and I am chasing genetic testing via my hematologist on Tuesday and also genetic screening tests as well on Tuesday and Dna AND BONE MARROW TESTING

@sirgalahad - I'm terribly sorry to hear about your sister and her recent news about her cancer. Understandable that you feel like your brain has shut down with all that you are processing.

I can identify with seeing a relative not pursue the conventional medicine route you feel would be best for their health situation. My sister and I have experienced some challenges with my father pursuing natural remedies/herbalism in lieu of Western medicine for serious diagnoses. At one point he was told he had elevated PSA and needed a prostate biopsy. Instead, he chose to take a maple syrup remedy he read about on the Internet. Five years later, his doctor and wife "made" him go for a biopsy, and he did have prostate cancer. I think it's hard to see a family member go down a path for healing an illness you feel is not ideal and feel very little control.

Hugs to you. Will be thinking of you and interested to see your posts any time you feel like talking or feel like you are needing some support from your friends here.

Yes, I have an elderly relative who lived with a lump in her breast for over 10 years. All she would do is take supplements and travel all over the country to visit "healers." We all found it so difficult to deal with all of those years. The tumor finally got so big that she couldn't put her arm in her coat, so she went through chemo, surgery and radiation. Unfortunately, people have to make their decisions and then live with the outcome, it is hard to accept but that is all we really can do. With acceptance comes peace of mind. I hope that you find that peace of mind, @sirgalahad.

It iis with a heavy heart that I share this message with all of you from our friend and colleague, @sirgalahad. His sister Gillian received some very distressing news recently. She had some testing done and the results came back positive for cancer. Unfortunately, it is not localized in only one place. It is everywhere, and because of that, she is determined not to seek heroic efforts in the form of any kind of treatment.

Obviously, this has been very distressing for our Aussie friend. I know if my loved one was facing similar circumstances, I would want them to try anything and everything to get better. My own daughter is struggling even now with health issues that normally an elderly person would have. We try it all, and hope for the best.

Let's keep Sir G. In our thoughts and prayers, and send all the positive encouragement we can to him. He will appreciate it very much, I am certain. Thank you, Mayo Clinic Connect family. @lisalucier, @gingerw, @colleenyoung . Thank you all for being such a caring community.

@mamacita I certainly will be keeping @sirgalahad close in thoughts nd prayers. I read the rest of the messages in this thread, and feel the same. Fear and nerves may make us strike out in anger, and not even think about how it may be perceived by others.

@lisalucier @hopeful33250 @parus @lioness @colleenyoung @gailb and others, I've been out of electronic communication since last Sunday due to a trip out to the desert. We just got back late this afternoon. Most likely I am just going to have to delete all of the posts that came in to me and slog through different threads in the next week to get caught up! For those who are in need of a hug I send you one cyberly, for those who have earned a pat on the shoulder I am sending that to you also. It seems very strange to be part of this cyber table and then suddenly have it taken away from me! I have missed you all....

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you and your family are facing and have faced. Sometimes our closest family members become envious of our situations that appear to them to be better than what they are going through. As I say, "the grass may look greener on the other side of the fence," but it still has to be mowed.

You are a very strong person to have your own struggles to deal with, and still have compassion and love for your sister and what shes going through. At the same time you work to help us understand your autism.

I have deep respect and empathy for what you are going through right now. Please accept my virtual hugs and cuddles @sirgalahad. Peace to you and your family.
