Using CBD oil to help taper off anxiety & depression meds?

Posted by tundra @tundra, Apr 14, 2018

I am currently in tolerance taking 30mg a day of Serepax (Oxazepam). I want to get off the benzo and realize I have to taper after 15 years of being on it. Has anyone used CBD oil minus the THC to taper off benzo's?

Hi

I weaned my son off clonazepam successfully very slowly using CBD as a substitute. He was taking clonazepam twice a day. I first lowered the dose in the evening very slightly. After a few weeks then lowered the mg of the morning . He was taking CBD every 4-6 hours. Gradually then went to removing the evening dose and then finally the am dose. I did this with the direction of his psychiatrist although she was not that knowledgeable about CBD. It took a few months to take him off clonazepam. Also increased the CBD slightly as well when I lowered the clonazepam dosage. I had heard that CBD could interact potentially with the medication but not that significant if you go very slowly in tapering.

Something I'm wondering about, re using CBD to help with tapering off (in my case) Clonazepam -- CBD inhibits the activity of the Cytochrome P450 enzyme group in the liver, which ordinarily metabolizes away the benzos and many other drugs after they've been in the body for a while. So, when CBD is present, many drugs persist in the body longer, and have more effect, than they would without CBD present. The benzos are listed as one of the drug classes with which CBD interacts in this way -- so couldn't they be potentiating the benzos, making them last longer in the system, and have more effect, than they would otherwise? (Grapefruit is another, more widely known Cytochrome P450 inhibitor, which is why we don't eat grapefruit when taking tetracycline, for example).
Does anyone have any idea how significant this would be for the use of CBD to help with weaning off Clonazepam?

I've been taking CBD while tapering Valium. Down to 2mg V per day. The cbd has some sedating anti-anxiety effects but I dont know that it helps get off. Any others with expereince please weigh in.

I've been on and off benzos for years..now down to 2mg Valium. I've been using pure CBD the last few weeks to assist. The CBD does not seem to prolong the effect of VAlium at least at my low dose.

CBD has certainly helped me with tapering off clonazepam. I'm currently down to 0.375mg from 1.5mg - 2mg. Sleep is touch and go though.

My doctor just recently prescribed Remeron (Mirtazapine) to help with sleep as I near the end of my taper. I'm currently down to 0.25mg of clonazepam. Does anyone here have any experience with Mirtazapine for sleep? I'm taking 7.5mg which is half a pill and seems to have restored my sleep issue which was a MAJOR part of withdrawal for me. Also, as I think back to why I even began taking Clonazepam some 20+ years ago, sleep was a major part of it. It's one of those chicken or the egg questions, what came first, anxiety or chronic insomnia? I'm 3 days into Remeron and so far so good. If this can help me combat the sleep issues, I'm pretty sure I can end my relationship with clonazepam for good. Another question I have here for anyone that has once been on this low is a dose of clonazepam is when would it be safe to just stop completely and "jump-off" from a dependency stand-point, 0.125mg? Thanks!

Have you ever felt sick to your stomach after taking CBD oil?

Hi jennie74. If I take cbd oil on an empty stomach I get very nauseous too.

CBD oil has really only showed effectiveness in some people with seizures. Not much else has been proven through controlled clinical trials. Also there is literally no regulation of CBD oil so each brand and batch can be totally different in amount of CBD, purity etc. Personally I have tried it twice for anxiety and it did nothing at all. I really wouldn't recommend it for trying to wean off of benzos. Let your physician tell you what to do.

Agree and disagree. The no regulation thing is a huge problem and as you said, it leads to inconsistent potency/purity. In a lot of cases, you are just buying 60oz of coconut oil for 100 bucks. That being said, when visiting California I did try a CBD vape from a licensed dispensary and definitely felt a subtle relaxing feeling. The problem with physicians(in this case) is that these alternative treatments are usually not part of their training, not to mention that the same physician is the one that put me on Valium, to begin with. These are the traditional tools they use. You have a fever, take paracetamol, you feel anxious, take a valium.

@artscaping may have some input on the nausea with taking CBD, as well as have thoughts about regulation related to CBD.
