Anyone have experience with the SoClean Machine?

Hello Everyone,
Many of us who use a CPAP, BiPAP, or other breathing devices have maybe been curious about a SoClean machine that has been advertised on TV quite a bit. I'm not sure but I would imagine that it could also be used for a Trilogy machine or any device which has the same size hoses if their equipped with a water reservoir. We purchased one out of pocket because our insurance did not cover it. It has a certain smell to the hoses after cleaning that many people say is hard to get used to. In the beginning we would disconnect the SoClean and let our BiPAP run for an hour or so to help remove any smell.
Some people say it has a clean smell to it while others say it takes some getting used to but eventually they do get used to it. Knowing that their equipment is free of bacteria gives a sense of comfort.

It works by a small hose coming off the adapter and being placed into the water reservoir oxygenating the water. No drops or chemicals in the water.

The last 2 times Lilbit has been hospitalized we have used our own BiPAP machine in the hospital because Lilbit prefers her own mask. We also brought the SoClean machine to the hospital and the Drs, nurses, and respiratory therapist were all curious how it worked. One therapist asked if we thought it actually cleaned everything. I replied, I don't know we just have to rely on the FDA information. Has anyone else been interested in the SoClean machine?

I have been using water and vinegar and it does work well. Does anyone have a problem with trying to make the mask go back to 0 before starting it up at night?

I have a problem. It wants to stay on numbers of previous night. I put on the mask a few hours before I go to sleep so I can try to adjust it. I start up the mask and let it run while strapped to face. I then wait thirty seconds turn it on hold and keep on hitting button to stop and start it. It might go right away but it also may take 10 times of on and off before it drops to zero. I then let the mask wait until I am ready to go to sleep. I also have a tube for extra oxygen attached which I turn on before going to sleep. My mask is special - extra wide small with more rubber lining mask. I cannot use The SoClean. Jane Brown

@macjane what brand or model of CPAP machine do you have? Maybe the on/off switch is bad? Can you contact the medical store where you got the CPAP or the manufacturer? Sorry for so many questions but it might help if you can identify the specific equipment you are using. Another member may be able offer some suggestions.

Just FYI, @macjane & @duvie About 8 years ago when I received my first CPAP machine, I was instructed to use vinegar and water to sanitize my mask, hose, tank, etc. Ironically, on March 4th of this year, the day of your comment, I received a new CPAP machine, mask tubing, etc. because my other one had died. I was instructed that the newer masks and hoses are made of different materials than the older ones and that vinegar or dish soap are absolute No-No's. The current protocol is baby shampoo. I have to say the baby shampoo is a much more pleasant scent than the vinegar as the vinegar was always quite strong right after cleaning. I also use the SoClean2 and had on hand some of their neutralizing wash so I use that sometimes too. It has no odor at all. Hope this is of help to you!

My CPAP Has attachments for oxygen so I can’t use a machine to clean it. Mask is very large with extra rubber attached.

@macjane - I purchased a less expensive cleaner for travel - Respify. I bought the model that came with a large bag which you put your mask and hose in. You could also put a humidifier tank in it. All for $99 https://respify.com/

I paid a little more and got a plastic tub with seal so I could use it easier at home if needed. Now I find it useful for sanitizing stuff in my bathroom like my toothbrush, razor and other items. Unfortunately that one is currently sold out.

I am thinking about trying the SoClean machine—I have a Phillips, respironics, trilogy 100 machine and it is not listed in their brochure as compatible—but you seemed to have used it. Are there special adapters needed to use the machines together?

I just bought my SoClean2 machine and have used it several times. The adaptor shipped with the machine worked perfectly on mine, I have a resmed machine which most likely is not made anymore. 3 additional adaptors were shipped with the machine I have.

Hi @normhalderson, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I also have a SoClean 2 machine and really like it. It does make it easy to put the mask in and hook up the hose adapter directly to the CPAP machine. I think you can get adapters for it from SoClean if you have any problems. How is the SoClean 2 working for you?

I can't use it because of special mask with additional oxygen hose.

My wife and I purchased this equipment for each of our systems a few years ago making the initial investment a great investment. It was not that expensive; quite lower in cost compared to our CPAP equipment.
Ozone (termed activated oxygen) dissipates quite rapidly after the machine is on. Once I start my CPAP, which I've had for four years now, the presence of ozone is completely dissipated (gone) within 20 seconds.
Each of our machines are next to our respective side of our bed. The mask and head gear, still attached to the tubing, is placed in the machine and the disinfection process is started. The process takes two hours. Later in the morning, if I think about it, I take the mask out of the machine and let the mask aerate the rest of the day with ambient air movement.
One great feature we have both noticed after using SoClean process, we DO NOT experience any side effects, nor nasal infections, or cold-like systems.
Permit to say, I was skeptical that it would work but I am VERY pleased that it is so easy to use and no more nasal/sinus infections, this even after daily scrubbing of the tubibg and cleaning of the mask. This was the condition before SoClean.
I am very sorry that it does not work for many, but I am grateful for the improvement of my (and my wife's) health. I highly recommend it based on my successful experience using SClean over the past few years.

I love my SoClean 2 also. I normally start it when I get up and leave the bedroom then after a few hours when it's done I go back and open the lid and leave the bedroom again. This was any remaining odor dissipates and I don't smell anything. I also purchased a less expensive portable CPAP cleaner that I can take with me if we have to travel somewhere. It is a Respify and comes with a large bag that can be sealed with the cleaning unit inside the bag. Works really well and only $99. It's a small rechargeable device that comes with a charging cable and power adapter. You can get 4 or 5 cleanings with it before having to plug it in and charge it. https://respify.com/

Thank you. John, for the portable CPAP cleaner information. An essential item to add to my travel gear.
