Barrett’s esophagus

Posted by jvanstratten @jvanstratten, Mar 22, 2018

Looking for info and help with Barret’s esophagus. I can’t figure out just how serious this is. I have read way too much online! I don’t really know how strict my diet really has to be. It is really stressful-. Does anyone here have it? And exactly how serious is it?

My ENT recommended that I read Dr. Koufman's Acid Reflux Diet, copyright 2015. Her first book's recipe's were too involved, but this updated version is very easy to do. My GERD is almost gone. I have been using The Sirt Food Diet, also, that Adele uses and it has been very effective in losing weight. I'm 16 lbs down. I adjust recipes for spiciness.

I have two hernias and a small aneurysm. I had major constipation until drinking the Sirt Food smoothie, adding in chia and seeds. That is almost gone, too!
Hope some of this helps. It's not easy.

@asdf That's great that your GERD is almost gone, and losing weight is a giant bonus, or at least it would be for me. I had not heard of either of your sources but your doctor must be very pleased with your results.
I just googled SIRT and it is not proven yet to be any better than any low-calorie diet but it doesn't wound harmful and if it helps and is something that you can follow it is probably good. The caveat was that after ending the diet plan, weight is easily gained back so you do need to plan for that next phase.

Sirt diet doesn’t leave out acidic foods which are harmful to us Barrett people. Grapes are very acidic.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback, folks. If you try the Sirt Food Diet, as mentioned in my prior post, adjust for spiciness, aka; acidity!

@riflemanz64 I'm surprised about apples. Perhaps since my Barrett's was not at all severe my endo didn't mention things that were only mildly acidic. The restrictions I most remember from then, which was around in 2013, were citrus, and coffee. I did used to drink wine but since being diagnosed with NASH cirrhosis and having a liver transplant I can't drink any alcohol anyway.
If I was told to not eat chocolate I probably convenient forgot that.

That’s great that your Barrett’s is mild. My GI doc said my esophagus looks like a shag carpet when it’s supposed to be smooth. That’s why I really hope this strict diet will help it. I won’t know until later this year when I get my egd.
