Barrett’s esophagus

I was diagnosed with Barretts about 13 years ago. I’ve since had a Nissen Fundoplication done since my “esophogial flap” wasn’t closing and food was even coming back up after eating. Since the surgery, I can’t throw up though, so I have Ondensatron on hand if I get nauseated. Barretts is pretty serious stuff and can really cause a lot of damage. I still get scoped every 3 yrs. to ensure it’s not progressing further.

Wow that is a heavy dose of nexium. But I could never tell that it made that much difference whether I took it or forgot it. Can you tell a difference if you miss a dose? I was concerned about long time affects since I have taken omerprszole for ten years. But I guess it must be necessary. I also tske D3.

Wish I could have the Nissen Fundoplication but when I do have Barrett's it is were the NF would be placed and it would hide the Barrett's from being seen and treated. Same thing for the LINX procedure.

I was diagnosed 1982 with Barretts along with acid reflux. I had an endoscopy every year until 2008 when my gastroenterologist now does it every 5 years. I take 40mg omneprazole, no diet and Barretts stable.

You are lucky yours did not progress to low then high dysplasia. I have had six endoscopy I the past year. My throat is beginning to feel it. I hope I will be able to spread them out. 

I know this discussion is from last spring — but I’d like to revive it if possible! I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus about 20 years ago. My Prevacid dose has gradually increased over the years to 30mg twice a day. A couple of years ago low grade dysplasia was found. I’ve just had my 3rd radio frequency ablation last Friday. Today is Monday. Im wondering how long it taken others to get back to normal after ablation.

I changed from omeprazole after 10 years to Pantaprozole which is not nexium. I don’t know whether there is much difference. I like this smaller pill better. Any comments in which is prescribed most and why?

@pdilly - I had Barretts esophagus before my Nissan fundoplication 25 years ago. I managed to get by without meds for years after my surgery. I didnt have any symptoms of reflux but they put me back on omeprazol prophylactically when i had a small hiatal hernia show up on some imaging, otherwise I imagine I wouldn't need it any more. They told me that Barretts can lead to cancer so they didn't want to take any chances it might return. Surgery is a great alternative to long term meds for some people. If you haven't discussed it with your doctor, you might consider it. Of course, your age and overall health will be a major factor in any decision about surgery.

Thank you for sharing your story @konniehoover. I also had Nissen fundiplication about four years ago. Sadly it did not end my need to take Prevacid.
The surgeries I am having now are called radio frequency ablation. They are for sections of my Barrett’s esophagus that have developed low-grade dysplasia. I am hoping there is someone out there who sees this who has had radio frequency ablation who can tell me how long it took them to recover after the procedure. I hope you have a great new year!
