Reactive Hypoglycemia & Chronic Sinusitis
Can anyone offer any advice or information?
Everyday is constant struggle, After I eat any food with the slightest bit of sugar i gain all of the below symptoms;
-Lightheadness (almost like a dream state)
-Sinus Pressure
-Lethergy
-Heart palpitations
-Increased Phlegm (Post nasal drip)
-Gritty/itchy eyes
-Blurred Vision
If I keep consuming sugar I will get a sinus infection ive had 3 in the space of 5 months in which ive had antibotics and steroid drops to treat each time but the only difference is it turns my green phlegm back to thick white. I still get the puffy checks, sinus pressure, fatigue and so on.
I began the Keto diet to try and cut out sugar but then i get symptoms of hypoglycemia from lack of sugar.
It might be worth mentioning that i also keep getting thrush and have had antheltes foot in the 5 months this has been happening. Ive also had a few instances of random shooting pains down my legs and in my knees and 2 or 3 times an intense stabbing pain under my left rib which lasted a few minutes. (Im not sure if any of that is related)
Im desperate its effecting every aspect of my life relationships, work performance/Attendence and motivation.
Male, 23 years old. No instances of any other illness before September 2017

I had the same symptoms. The Keto just makes it worse.
I’m having very good results after visiting a dietitian, not a nutritionist, a dietician. Which I highly recommend! It’s pretty unbelievable, but I’m consuming 2000 calories per day. 50% gr. carbs, 25%gr. fat, and 25% gr protein. NO ADDED SUGARS!!! Devided into six meals Every meal with that ratio and it’s working. !!!! Everyone should have a died designed, by a dietitian, for their individual health conditions!
Good luck. With sympathy.

Hi @danny95
Were you ever able to connect with an endocrinologist and get some help? Would enjoy hearing from you with an update on how you are doing.
I am experiencing the same as well. Did you ever het a diagnosis or solution?
@wildman2021 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, a place to give and get support.
In order for me to connect you with other members and related discussions, may I ask what symptoms you are having?
Thank you for your reply:
I am experiencing extreme sinus pressure headache. gets worse every time I eat sugar. I can't figure out out if this is from quitting smoking, sinus infection, Hypoglycemic, Pre-Diabetes or what?
I would just like to say that I started taking 50,000 iu a week of Vitamin D and I am pretty sure that has helped my sinus issues. Purchased from Amazon so anyone can buy it. Also I was taking 5,000 a day but it was not helping.
@hayley3 -thank you for the recommendation of Vitamin D. Vit D3 is critical for immune support and overall health. Vit D3 improves immune health while decreasing inflammation. Many people are deficient and are unaware how important this vitamin is. It is refreshing to hear advice on starting from within of what you can control, rather than only getting/giving advice to make a doctor appt. What presents as sinus pressure has so many other contributors rather than the sinus themselves. Work with ways, like you mentioned through Vitamins/Minerals to restore yourself from the inside. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it will happen and consistency is key. There is no rx that can take the place of vitamins and minerals.
Thank you for the real advice.
@danny95 Hi! I have had this same issue off-and-on for quite some time. I had a number of tests (allergy, MRI, CT, DM, ENT specialist etc… too many to list). At the end of the day the only thing that helped (and it did more than help, it basically took care of the problem) was being prescribed long-term nystatin (anti fungal) while limiting my diet (low carbs/sugar/no alcohol/no caffeine etc). It was a Candida diet. I found a naturopath who is also an MD and he’s the one who finally solved the problem for me.
So, I had systemic candida overgrowth. It made me allergic to everything (because it can so severely compromise the immune system). I took nystatin for quite some time while I remaining on the candida diet.
I hope you explore this option. Good luck.
Hello @crogvic, Welcome to Connect. Thank you for sharing your experience and what helped you. I hope @danny95 sees your post but I suspect that he may no longer be following Connect. It's really great that you were able to find a doctor who is also a naturopath and better yet finally solved your problem.
Do you mind sharing what you were searching for when you found Connect?
@crogvic Hi, I stopped following this thread for a while as I suddenly got better for a number of years. But now im back in the same situation. Sinus Symptoms creeping back in, fatigue and neuropathy shooting pains down torso & limbs. Pain in mid back, doctors are doing some more tests then sending me to a neurologist. Resurgence in the illness is suggestive, at least to me, of an autoimmune illness.
