Does CBD oil help you with your depression and/or anxiety?

Posted by lalyfa @lalyfa, Feb 24, 2018

I am curious to know if anyone has had success with CBD or Hemp oil helping with depression/anxiety? I’ve been reading a lot about it and am curious.
I've been reading about this and am very interested but would like thoughts/opinions from anyone who has actually tried it or knows someone who has. TIA

Thank you,
Laura

I am a mom of two kids. You know that being a mom is the toughest job. Everyday routine makes me extremely tired and sometimes I feel great stress at the end of the day. My sister recommended using hemp oil as a natural stress relief remedy. I googled and found a great variety of hemp oils and I do not know which is the best to me. I see that there is 500mg, 800mg, 1000mg, 1500 mg, 2000 mg .....hemp oils. What's the difference? Which one should I take against stress and anxiety?

Hi, @wellnessjane - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm also the mom of two kids, and I know what you are saying that being a mom can be a tough job and can lead to feeling stressed at the end of the day.

You may note I moved your post to a discussion called "CBD oil and depression/anxiety" so that your post will be see by other Connect members who have similar concerns.

You'd asked about possibly taking CBD and detangling the differences between different kinds and dosages. I'd like you to meet some other members who might share some input from their own experiences, like @popolopo @brightwings @rascal1 @stephanieann @artscaping.

Have you also found other strategies that work for you to relieve stress or help with the feeling extremely tired, @wellnessjane?

I also use gabapentin and tramadol. The Cbd/tcb 50/50 helps me lower this.

@wellnessjane, @lisalucier, Welcome to our community of compassionate individuals looking for answers and verification of authenticity. I think you are amazing in that you can handle the Mom job so well. I sometimes can barely handle myself. (My daughter would agree) . However, I do think you need to do a bit more research before spending money on a product that may not deliver the stress relief that you are seeking. First of all, this link answers the most important question.....what is the difference between CBD oil and Hemp oil. https://honestmarijuana.com/hemp-oil-vs-cbd-oil/

The bottom line is that hemp oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant and is neither stress relieving nor medicinal because the hemp oil is very low in cannabinoids. That component is what is necessary to reduce anxiety, stress and even inflammation. The purist CBD oil is from the flowers, leaves, and stalks. When purchased from the best dispensaries it can be helpful. Even more helpful for me is a dosage that has just enough THC to activate the CBD properties and terpenes, e.g. 2:1 means 2 parts CBD and 1 part THC. It also can lift your mood a bit which is sometimes a godsend in the morning. You may also want to explore an RX called duloxetine. I am moving slowly with a graduated daily dosage for stress and anxiety. Anxiety begets pain which begets more anxiety which begets more pain and the cycle is never ending until you just crash. Hang in there and keep posting. There are many experiences to be shared on this forum. Please share yours. And I wish you a day free of suffering. Chris

Using Sunsoil 600 works for me. THC may increase anxiety so It's lower THC but still full spectrum. Lower doses twice a day handles my anxiety just fine, everyone is different. If it's a super awful day I just add another dose. CBD oil can become expensive so I'm very thankful my body responds well to a smaller amount

Welcome Karen, I like your quest for health. Good for you. I am an empath and feel we have traveled the same paths of looking for answers and solutions to our health concerns. Never give up, the journey is worth it.
I have had 19 surgeries in my life and many life crippling events. One foot in front of the other gets you a long way. I humbly share I am an example of that.
.
So dosage and how to apply: hmmm, there are so many different types of CBD and methods of application out there.
.
Above all, trust your gut.....
.
I started out last summer at 50 mg a day after learning about it. I realized it helped. I felt better. So month by month, as finances allowed, I increased the amount of CBD in the bottle. I tried many different brands and costs. I gradually settled on Lazarus Naturals. I was getting CBD in coconut oil, 1200 mg for 50 bucks. That's the highest concentration I could find for the money.
So in December, I finally found the dosage that seemed to be the best for me. 25 mg three times a day. 25 mg 3xs a day.
I am correcting a previous post here. I wrote 50 mg 3 x's a day before. That is not correct as I was only taking 1/2 tsp each time. 50 mg per teaspoon is the concentration.
.
But start out somewhere and gradually increase it until you have a feeling of wellbeing. Only you know what that is for you. Stay at one level for a week or so and evaluate the changes. Your guts will tell you what to do.
.
Now as far as the AR, rub the CBD into the painful joints as needed. You will be glad you did. There are different products made for this kind of application. Or make your own by putting CBD liquid in coconut oil and rubbing that on. I am not a medical professional....just saying...
You have a strong spirit in you and it will take you far, both uphill and down....don't settle for bed. The fight is so worth it. You will be glad you did.
Smiling at you, keep coming back. I sense the wisdom in you. Bright Wings
.
I heard you loud and clear you are in bed. I spent 4 years in bed....don't want to do it again. Today, I'm planning on buying a kite, no 2 of them cuz flying kites is so much more fun with another. The moments of joy I get from flying the kites is so fulfilling, cuz I send myself up to ride the kite, even if only in my mind.
.
When I have challenges, I fight to take my life back, sometimes minute by minute, but today I live a victorious life.
Attitude is everything.

I use CBD NuLeaf off internet. Helps. Also have Medical marijuana card. My question. Everyone is talking about mg and how many mg they take. Well, I know nothing about mg All I know is dropper. I take a 1/4 dropper of this or that. Or a 1/2 dropper of this or that. I have no clue how many mg are in a full dropper. There are times the amount isn't helping and then I hear someone taking this or that many mg. Please explain. I want to get the most benefit from the product.

Curious as to where you got and what brand of CBD oil you are using?

This is a very old thread, that I just stumbled on.

I emphatically will state that high purity CBD Oil and Salve have worked miracles for me.

My blood pressure has dropped about 25 points in the one month that I've been on CBD Oil. My hip bursitis is gone. My ugly dark spotted sun/age forearms are very nice again, even two doctors/dermatologists have emphatically said that they will ALWAYS look that ugly way.

I've read quite a bit about CBD, in that research and testimonials state that it will help anxiety, autism, depression, Alzheimer's, much, much more.

The key is to buy only high purity, high quality. There's a bunch of cheap, diluted stuff being sold. Amazon won't even list the CBD purity in the many"hemp" products if sells.

CBD is legal in all 50 states, but is not regulated anywhere. Hence, cheap imitation stuff.

My dropper is metered so you can monitor your dosage. Then you can find a chart and plug in your numbers. Reddit.com has a really active CBD forum with lots of information

Hi, @clark711 - thanks for sharing your experiences with CBD oil and salve. Sounds like it's been an exciting journey for you.

We are very happy to have you as a member and participating in sharing your experiences. As our Mayo Clinic Connect guidelines do prohibit commercial postings, advertisements or solicitations, though, we'd ask that you refrain from selling/posting links to product sales. I did remove the last bit of your previous post in this discussion for that purpose.

Back to you, @clark711: Do you have a diagnosis of depression or anxiety? If so, what has helped you?

I have been totally off the effexor and all anti-depressants for 2 weeks now. The dizziness is getting much better however my emotions/agitation are horrible. I cry at everything and am extremely crabby/agitated. I realize most of this has to do with the withdrawal. I really want to see this through to find out if I can live without anti-depressants but at the same time I know it's very hard on my family. I have another doctor appt beginning of April and she says that if I don't feel better by then I most likely will need to go back on an anti-depressant. For the most part I agree with her. My hopes of proving her wrong as getting slim however. I'd like to know how long it took some of you who have withdrawn from anti-depressants to feel somewhat 'normal' or you knew you had to go back on them? I guess I'm asking if another month is a good amount of time for me to determine what I should do. In some ways I feel like I should start on them again now but I'm not going there yet? BTW, I am in no way feeling suicidal. Mornings seem to be my worst time and by early evenings I feel somewhat better - is this strange too? I haven't tried the CBD living water yet but did find a place near me to get it. Just havent had the time to get there. I also have the Ativan which I take one night to help with sleep. I'm trying not to take it unless really necessary. Tomorrow I have a huge even that my husband and I are in charge of so I'm planning to take an Ativan in the morning to get me through the day without falling apart (crying scene) in front of everyone (or yelling at them) :)! Thanks for all your input!!

Your remark about feeling worse in mornings is common. I get that too. It begins to get better as the day progresses and by evening I am feeling fine. Docs don’t seem to have an explation for this.
