Anxiety: bouts of nervousness, dry flushing and nausea

I have been experiencing intense bouts of nervousness, dry flushing and nausea for months. These “spells” come on quickly and pass quickly. They happen a few times a week, which doesn’t sound like a big deal. But this feeling is so frightening! I’ve had heart, blood and urine testing. Everything comes back “normal”. I am a fit 70-year-old woman, so I can’t blame this on hormones! I’ll be at Mayo for my annual physical next month thank goodness. If my symptoms have a name, they’ll know it!! In the meantime, I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has similar issues!

@ccdc I know this feeling. I scare myself at times. Mornings are the worse for some reason. Therapy in the past was a disaster as I believed the threats of some seriously disturbed professionals. I advocate for myself now. Just because someone is a professional does not always mean they are ethical. Do your homework. There are good therapists. They are hard to find. If you are not comfortable with one then find another. No one knows "you" as you yourself do. I do hope you can get some help. CBT has helped the most and the other therapists I had did not teach thus. I knew more about their lives than they did mine. The things you mentioned are real. Everyone deserves some quality of life. Keep us posted as you can.

I left So angry.I hate being challenged like that.It had me pissed off for nxt couple hours.Ruined my day.Well thats the thing i came up for counseling another day and sat for Little over and hour.And come to find out she was in with another client,When i had checked in almost an hour and a half ago!That isn't the first time there either.The first time i went they screwed everything all up and i sat and waited hrs.I reeally needed Counseling that day too!It'sVery Frustrating.

Sure would be nice to not always be tied in knots within. Antidepressants increased my dark thoughts and had me doing and saying things I normally would not. Yup, we are all different. My medication is art and at times this does not help. Have been in one a funk for a long time. Anxiety reigns supreme in this dark world. Enough negativity.

as i have reached the age of 80 it is more than difficult to use a medication for anxieties also with bi-polar. using other and many medications for the age does not mix well with anxietiy medication. seeing the psychiatrist monthly does help but it is not enough just for every day living. i am using Lorazapwm 0.05 taba 2 X day. (bettet than nothing and doctor prescribed). Telling myself to HOLD ON and CALM DOWN. it is so very hard to stay calm. But some how i do. After a while it becomes a habit to calm down. but i still fell as though it is eating me up inside. but life is still so beautiful. I am hanging on and enjoying what i can in between the agonies.

It is unfortunate that there are meds that may help for a while and one may find themselves feeling bad again. Also unfortunate there are not pills to fix everything. Some may help for a short while. Some may make symptoms worse. Some of the commonly used scripts used for anxiety are typically only prescribed for short term. There are people with generalized anxiety and do not know the cause. We are all who we are and there are no medications to solve all anxiety issues. Anxiety's companion is usually depression. For some there is no reason or one that is evident.

Had the same problem with Wellbutrin. Oft a doctor may not believe a patient thinking the person is drug seeking. Things are difficult for doctors when it comes to prescribing. Anyone having a mental health diagnosis may find a primary care doctor will ignore any new symptoms they cannot find an answer for with the regular tests. I no longer tell a doctor about physical symptoms. Blood work is okay so I am deemed healthy. I do not have a history of physical pain. Again, there are not pills to fix everything.

@peach414144 Self talk also works well for me-at times. I was programmed for so long to please others it has been a challenge to say "no" when someone wants me to do something. Thing is I can do so politely without giving a reason. There are those that will try to beg, insist on a reason and I become repetitive with my reply. Interesting how effective this technique can be...also keeps the users and abusers from bothering me. This works for me as those type of people are not friends. I was trained this was way as a child and it has taken me over 65 years to turn from thus. To bring up a child in the way he/she should go is advice and not a guarantee. Once I realized thus it became easier to say, "no". To do so without guilt and fear.

@strongbutterfly Did your anger help your angst? Mayhap you need to try finding another therapist at another place. There are therapist's that are not adept at setting boundaries with some patients. If this is a pattern I would be seeking out someone else.

You are very welcome. The psych I am leaving is in his mid 70's and has always been very kind and compassionate when my wife goes with me. He moved his last appt. up to a time that too early for her to get me after she gets through with school and get back to their office. When I have gone alone, he is a completely different person, to the point of what I would consider malpractice, but that is just my opinion. He told me two things at my last visit that had no basis in fact and had I been suicidal, could have been very dangerous, so I decided it was best to move because at his age, I don't really expect him to change. I did mot have success with cymbalta when I tried it, but I was in a much darker place than I have been recently, so we'll see what the new psych recommends. I am sorry you are experiencing the migraines with the cymbalta. I wonder if anyone else out there has experience with Cymbalta and can offer their experiences. Many side effects diminish over time and I would like to hear about others who have tried it and things got better over time?

@gman007 I have been taking Cymbalta for about 7 years and have had no side effects.. for once I found an anti-depressant with no effects. it helps my depression but I had to upgrade it a few years ago and now it doesn't seem to be working and I am depressed. Don't know whether to get it upgraded again or try something new which I hate because I am sensitive to drugs and going on the roller coaster of testing it again doesn't make me very happy.

@peach414144 - A popular saying now is "flip the script" or change the picture as we see it. It sounds to me like you have done something amazing and need to celebrate with self talk such as " I have learned to overcome the negatives in my life by staying calm and relaxed and it allows me to truly enjoy the great things in life because I am not preoccupied with worrying". I know I simply took what you said and changed the words around a bit and what their impact has been for you, but what we tell ourselves about ourselves (our perception) is very often our reality. My wife is working on her PhD in counseling and this is just one of the many things I have learned from her about how we have much more control over what we think and how we think than we are often aware of - she would tell you I need to practice what I preach - and it does take some effort to be aware of what you are subconsciously doing to our minds and then change it. What do you think? Can I get you to give yourself a high five and celebrate the wisdom of your 80 years and achieving the ability to enjoy life despite the potholes? I definitely think you deserve it!
