Anxiety: bouts of nervousness, dry flushing and nausea

Posted by annedodrill44 @annedodrill44, Jan 16, 2018

I have been experiencing intense bouts of nervousness, dry flushing and nausea for months. These “spells” come on quickly and pass quickly. They happen a few times a week, which doesn’t sound like a big deal. But this feeling is so frightening! I’ve had heart, blood and urine testing. Everything comes back “normal”. I am a fit 70-year-old woman, so I can’t blame this on hormones! I’ll be at Mayo for my annual physical next month thank goodness. If my symptoms have a name, they’ll know it!! In the meantime, I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has similar issues!

@ccdc I know this feeling. I scare myself at times. Mornings are the worse for some reason. Therapy in the past was a disaster as I believed the threats of some seriously disturbed professionals. I advocate for myself now. Just because someone is a professional does not always mean they are ethical. Do your homework. There are good therapists. They are hard to find. If you are not comfortable with one then find another. No one knows "you" as you yourself do. I do hope you can get some help. CBT has helped the most and the other therapists I had did not teach thus. I knew more about their lives than they did mine. The things you mentioned are real. Everyone deserves some quality of life. Hi, @strongbutterfly -- I am sorry you felt doubted by your new physician and as if you had to beg for medication for your anxiety. That must be terribly frustrating.

I am thinking that perhaps some other members who have talked about facing anxiety might have some thoughts on this situation you faced with getting some help: @gelebito, @amberpep, @gman007, @underedwardstale2018 and @arachel.

In the end, were you prescribed some medication or talk therapy for your anxiety?

I was put on Wellbutrin 3 weeks ago. For 3-4 days I felt better. After that I starting getting worse. I'm in such a horrible place that I'm scared. I'm afraid I'll never get my old happy self back. I'm failing my family and it kills me. I try to put on like I'm great but I'm not really good at it. I know my husband would love to have his wife back. Has anyone else had this problem with Wellbutrin? What do I do?

Hi @strongbutterfly. I have had problems recently with my psych and his willingness to try something different as I have been on the same basic meds for my anxiety and depression for a very long time and never get past "just getting by". I am sorry you were doubted; it is ridiculous to have to endure more anxiety to get help for your anxiety. Have you been on it long enough to notice any effects? I know they say 10-14 days, but I have usually noticed a difference sooner, but that may just be placebo effect. If you prefer not to say, please don't feel like you should, but since I am looking to try something different, I would be interested to know what you started on? I also read your post from last November and I am currently reading a book that has been somewhat beneficial called "Mindfulness:Finding Peace in a Frantic World. If you check it out, I would love your comments. Take care and I pray the new med works very well.

@kdo087. I have been taking wellbutrin for probably 15 years now and it is one of the oldest antidepressants/anxiety meds out there, but no one reacts the same to every med. If so, there would not be about a dozen classes of medicines for treating anxiety and depression and probably 100+ different meds in those classes. Most labels for this type of medication will warn that it may take 7 to 10 or 14 days before they are completely active in your system, but it could be working on you sooner. I would expect your doctor to recommend a little more time before stopping and trying something else, but if you have any, read closely, ANY, thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, you need to call and tell your doctors office that and get someone to pay attention. This is not about your husband, children, boss, other family, etc..., it is about you and getting you better and then the other will fall in place. Please stay in touch, let us know how you are doing, and if you change meds or feel this one working better for you.

The doctor put me on Wellbutrin to stop smoking. I felt good at first then started feeling bad and then turned out I started to have suicidal thoughts. I was so scared. The best thing to do is stop immediately and tell your doctor. Take care!

That used to be the preferred medication to help people with the anxiety of quitting smoking. As an aside, it was actually developed for soldiers going into battle before WWII (I think) to take away their fear. Was not supposed to increase their risk-taking, but simply allow them to do what they had been trained to do when nerves were frayed. I thought most docs started with Chantix as a smoking cessation drug these days. I tried every drug and "gimmick" (I mean no ill will if a staple in your ear worked for you) available that I could find. Wellbutrin, Chantix, Hypnosis (both group and 1-on1), CBT, etc...and finally quit when my wife stopped giving hugs because she was so allergic to the odor on my clothing. There were other factors involved, but that one alone was all the motivation I needed. I will talk to anyone struggling with cessation because I want everyone to get all of the support they need. Anyone with things that helped them get off the nicotine or their own insights, please share them.
