Heart palpitations with anxiety?

Posted by danybegood1 @danybegood1, Nov 19, 2017

Does anyone ever have heart palpitations when they are experiencing anxiety? If so, what helps you stop them? I had a heart attack last year. Should I be concerned? Dany

Hello @lisalucier and @danybegood1

There is no doubt that anxiety can cause many health problems and/or make existing health problems worse. While I do have some rapid heart rate, I take a beta blocker on a regular basis. Have you had a cardiology work-up, @danybegood1?

This would be an important first step. While rapid heart rate can be serious, as in an A-Fib diagnosis, they are often not serious depending on how often they occur and how high the heart rate goes. Here is some good information from Mayo's website about heart palpitations, https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/heart-palpitations/basics/definition/CON-20034780. Please take a moment to read this article. It is very comprehensive.

That being said, you really need to discuss this with your doctor and have an evaluation.

Will you keep in touch with us and let us know how you are doing?

I have had palpitations, but under extreme anxiety (usually after an event has occurred oddly enough!), but they have been rare for me. I have had esophageal spasms that were attributed to either a bad fall on black ice or because of swallowing too many pills daily. (40 mg. of prednisone meant swallowing 8 pills daily along with thyroid, cholesterol meds etc.)

I often have heart palpitations, but I have Mitral Valve Prolapse and Anxiety issues. Hard to remember which came first. I feel like one feeds off the other sometimes. Often I can "think" the heart flutters away, sometimes it takes more effort. They aren't as scary to me as they once were, but I have worked hard to deal with my fear of them. It is sometimes a struggle, but I don't give up.

Hello danybegood1,
I haven't really considered it to be anything but part of an anxiety or panic attack. It's definitely something to have checked out. And read the article because Teresa has been spot on with her advice and thoughts in my situation. A lifeline for sure when you need to reach out.

Sure do and the best thing for me is to concentrate on my breathing and endeavor to help my mind/body relax...much easier to type these words than place their action in the realm of reality.

After my first post, I realized there is a question I often ask myself. How do you know when the heart palps Are anxiety and then become a more serious problem. I don't go to the doctor very often. Once I am told "it's nothing to worry about" I try to let it go... But sometimes I have that feeling, " but what if? "

I have Anxiety attacks now and again. I noticed my heart pounding so hard during them that I could feel it up in my throat. I went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. They did some tests and ruled that out, but found I have an irregular rhythm that is worsened by my anxiety. They have put me on a med to slow my heart rate, and this seems to have done the trick. Anxiety can play some weird games with your body, but don't just brush it off, it never hurts to go get things checked out.

Oh yes, anxiety can do some dreadful things. I tried to tell my new PCP that it was anxiety and not my heart. Sent me to Cardiologist who asked me why I was referred to him. Patiently explained and he rolled his eyes and wished me Merry Christmas. I smiled and told him to bill the one who sent me altho she was currently in Haiti and may be a while before he could collect. He thought I was joking and was even more incredulous when he realized I was being serious. We had a nice laugh as he thought I had said Hades...true story.
