New confused diabetic

Hi, I am able to control my numbers with diet and exercise, what I am having difficulty with is my fasting numbers at 5 a.m. it's 6.6 and goes up a point every 45 mins ,thereafter. I am on metformin 2X a day 500 mg and app gliclazide 30 mg 1X a day, only been a week but still high numbers in A.M. Could this be early dawn or Simogyis and is the treatment different.Cant seem to get the G.P. or specialist to acknowledge it's only a problem in the A.M.Any similar experiences or advice?

Hello @vanin11, I also would like to welcome you to Connect. I'm not diabetic but have had high fasting glucose numbers so that my primary care docs tell me I'm pre-diabetic. My response is usually that nothing has changed in 20 years...I don't have diabetes. In recent years I've changed my diet and worked on eliminating most of my sugar intake but I have my days. Hello @vanin11 , Welcome to the Mayo Clinic Connect.

I am diabetic, I take 1000mg Metformin 2 times and 3mg Glimiperide (2mg in the morning and 1mg before bed). I agree with everyone else, It is a battle. I'm not a doctor but from my experience your morning numbers would make me happy and I have controlled diabetes. You say your blood glucose goes up 1 point every 45 minutes which would tell me that your liver is thinking you are ready for an active day and it is pumping out Glycogen. Mine starts about 4:00 am. May I ask how high it gets before you eat a mid day meal? Do you have any low glucose readings and what time of the day?

I don't let it get above 8.5, then I have breakfast to try and reset the numbers.
I was just out shovelling snow and it went low,like 4, I get weak and need to invest something sweet.
I want to share something I learned in the last day or so.
I was watching a British tv show on Drs and health.
Most of us like pasta but are reluctant to enjoy it because of how it rings up the Blood Sugar.If u cook the pasta and eat it cold, the blood sugar is reduced significantly but if you let it cool and then re heat it with what ever your preparing it with it further keeps the numbers down, something like 30 %..So apparently how this works is that preparing it this way moved it tru to the large bowel where it passes tru like fibre.
I tried it tonight ,cause my wife wanted spaghetti and meatballs, so I had a nice portion with meatballs and basil pesto and a sweet dessert, and 2.25 hrs., my blood sugar was 8.2
So here's a good way for people who enjoy pasta to eat without numbers going sky high.

Forgot your 1 question, after bfast it resets and my numbers are 6 to 7 depending on what and how much I eat
So b4 lunch it's anywhere between 5.5 and 6.5.

Yes, love pasta. I'm going to have to try that trick.
I never go anywhere without carrying glucose tablets. Like you shoveling snow, I have had low glucose while working in the yard and was almost not able to open the package of sugar tablets. The tablets are inexpensive and can save your life.

I'm using a metric conversion chart but it sounds like you are doing pretty good. Have you ever had an A1-C blood test done? This test will tell you how well your doing on average.

Yes, it's 8.3 , when I have it done.if I could get it done at 6 a.m. it would be below that

Well thanks ,I will have to get some, usually I'm able to get in and have some peanut butter or honey, it doesn't happen often but it's nasty when it does, I walk for exercise and it's usually when I'm farthest from home that it hits and I'm really weak, sweating when I get home.

@vanin11 Thanks, that's really interesting, I will have to try it. Usually I get a whole wheat pasta or I make pasta for my husband and squash for me to put the sauce on, and that's OK too.

Yes, I always get the pasta with the highest fiber content also Costco here had some made from beans, high fiber, but taste was so do, but hope this trick works, will have to try google that show and see it again.Any tricks on morning high blood sugar levels?
