How do you manage thick mucus? What else can I try?

How is everyone managing their thick saliva? The doctors tell me more water and a humidifier. I have done these things. Just recently, I started using a small personal steamer. It has helped. I was just wondering if anyone has anything else I could try?

Thank you, pharmacist told me this morning that the drug and nebulizer wont work on the mucus from my cancer treatment.

She said There is nothing else that will work. Don't know what kind of physician to see.

@roxanne43 my pharmacist told me the same thing. My Dr told me that a humidity would help to thin the mucas. I also asked about a small personal steamer. She said yes, but use water only. Don't use anything in it like Vic's or anything menthol. I know we are all different. This really helped to thin my mucas. You could ask your doctors or pharmacist. Did you decide to get a suction machine?

@roxanne43 my son in law is struggling with that problem with his tracheostony from throat cancer. His team suggested Mucinex, just the plain guaifenesin variety. It thins secretions and seems to help him some..

Yes, I can't imagine being without this machine. I have 3 of them. I keep one beside me where I sleep, one in my basement and one ready to take in the car when we go anywhere. The first one my surgeon's office ordered it for me. The other 2 I got from Amazon. Just type in suction machines and they will pop up. I'm on the feeding tube as I'm typing and can't get to my machine to get the brand name, but if you can't find it on Amazon let me know and I'll get you the brand name. There are several. You may want to check with you radiologist's office. Maybe your insurance will pay for it. I'm on medicare and they will pay for 1 every 2 years in Kentucky. Let me know. Joyce

I kept my nurses busy emptying out the filter on the suction machine. I used that thing left, right & centre. It worked like a charm.

Get xylimelts use them at night. Try using only one cut in half instead of the two recomended by the maker. You will get some goop but less than without by a long shot. During the day I sip water and coffee. Some people really like tea I do stay away from about anything that comes in a can! Also there is xylitol gum. Ice Breakers in the tooth looking box are highest in xylitol. It’s the number one ingredient. This is nice to have when you can’t get to water! It does last a while so it’s pretty good for dry mouth and less goopyness.

I go thru a bottle of fruit xylimelts very often. A necessity to carry me through the day. Goopyness is hideous though. Having a handkerchief comes in handy.

I was told to use those are the methods too. An overnight humidifier has been very helpful. Another thing is to stay hydrated. Because I can't seem to get enough water (I am NPO and use a G-tube for all nutrition) my GP requested that I receive an infusion of 1 liter weekly.

@zenren14 I keep a suction machine with me at all times. I keep one in the living room, one in the bedroom, one in the basement and one ready for the car whenever we go anywhere. It's crazy I know, but I get real nervous when there isn't one in reach. Lol

@zenren14 luckily by day I just take small sips of water or coffee mostly very frequently. So I only use xylimelts at night. Maybe I’ll throw some in the glove box just in case! I cough swish water in my mouth and move it fast to get some of the mucus out but I do clear up eventually then my nose runs! But just having a water bottle is nice when I’m running around.. I’m happy just had a good scan so that’s nice.

I have tried Mucinex I didn't notice any difference after 4 bottles, so I discontinued. I think my problem is sinus drainage. It was pretty bad during radiation treatment (1st cancer 2010) and only let up after having a stoke. An ENT once told me a few times that a liter of fluid normally flows down your throat during the day. My new problem is too much saliva. I think this is due to my skin graph on my tongue (2nd cancer 2020).
I had a Throat Dilatation done to try to gain back some ability to swallow. No dramatic improvement. Noted scar tissue and a narrowing of the opening of my esophagus. Probably try again next year.
