Mass on Left Kidney
I am a 71 year old woman and went to the ER in May 2026 due to discomfort and discovered I have a large hiatal hernia, diverticuli issues and a mass on my left kidney. An MRI indicated it is a small mass on my kidney and unfortunately it is not a cyst. So they are watching it for now to see if it changes. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this.

@nordicgirl60 welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. So you were recently diagnosed with 3 things: hiatal hernia, diverticuli issues and a mass on your left kidney. You asked “if anyone else has experienced this”. I plus friends &/or family have been diagnosed with 1 or 2 of these things (but not all 3). Are you wondering if there is a connection between these 3 diagnoses?
@nordicgirl60 @cehunt57 I can only address the small mass on your left kidney. I, too, had a small mass on my (right) kidney, and tests showed that it was cancerous. As an outpatient, I went to an interventional radiologist and he performed what is called "Cryoablation" where you freeze and dissipate the mass. It is totally unpainful, requires a few hours of your time, and that you x-ray that area annually for 5 years. It's a no brainer for me as this happened over 10 years ago.
I too have a cancerous mass on my right kidney. It is only 2cm so I am to just wait through surveillance for over 6mths before a next scan.
How large was your mass? Did you have symptoms that related to your mass.
Wondering if my fatigue is from it or maybe mental health.
Also did you make changes to your diet knowing you had kidney cancer?
I had a 2.3cm mass found incidentally on a chest CT. As I have CKD, I had no desire to leave it and follow it, as the sooner it was removed the more healthy kidney would be left than with a resection in the future with a larger mass. I had a robotic partial nephrectomy about 3 weeks ago and it was a papillary renal carcinoma grade 2 (low for a papillary cancer) with no aggressive features (no necrosis, sarcomatoid features), with clean margins, so a pT1a grade 2 tumor, which is about as good a report as you can get for a kidney cancer. I'm glad I decided to go ahead with the resection and protect as much of my already unhealthy kidney as I could. The decision on what the correct approach does best when individualized to your situation. With a healthy kidney I might well have gone for surveillance rather than surgery given how slow growing these tend to be. So the decision to watch it is perfectly reasonable and frequently recommended at some major cancer centers as the standard approach. Mine was a bit different, and you have to decide what makes the most sense for you. Good luck!
