Hashimoto help, feeling defeated and desperate

Posted by fritztraci @fritztraci, Dec 16, 2025

I have been struggling for many years with my weight having extreme fluctuations, but this past year I have experienced a significant weight gain. I’m 5’ and 190 lbs., six months ago I weighed 160. I restrict what I eat to a hard boiled egg and berries every breakfast, lunch is usually some Trader Joe’s frozen meal or a salad with grilled chicken, dinner is the only time I really allow myself to eat a full meal. With that, my GI is out of control. I no longer like to go out to eat because I have diarrhea very soon after I eat anything with horrible cramping. My periods are so heavy and can last months long. I get this very hot flushing of my face and neck without any activity. My skin is ridiculously dry. I had my thyroid tested and ultrasound of thyroid and gallbladder. My doctor determined I have all markers for hashimoto with a goiter thyroid that is irregular texture, no nodules, my thyroid antibodies were at the highest level on the scale, however my t4 and TSH are within normal though at the very low end, and my doctor just wants yearly blood work. I’m so frustrated and exhausted all the time, I feel horrible physically and mentally, which I started therapy for this because I am at the point of being so depressed that I have lost all motivation, cry a lot, and am just uncomfortable going out! I’ve asked if there are supplements or something for weight loss and just keep being told we just need to monitor because there’s nothing you can do for hashimoto. I just want some help and to feel like myself again. I tried researching hashimoto but there is just so much conflicting information on what to do for it.

Hello,
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s several years ago . My thyroid numbers are still normal however. Two years ago I was diagnosed with IGA Vasculitis an autoimmune an autoimmune disease which is extremely rare in adults. I have always had ( 30 years) autoimmune issues. I had been on Gabapentin for years but eventually went off as the constant burning and tingling all over my body seemed to get better,
In the last two years the episodes of burning and tingling have reoccurred, sometimes with a vengeance. I when through a full neurology evaluation at Mayo. As usual my results were all normal. I often wonder why Mayo did not follow with testing for small nerve fiber neuropathy which seems more like my symptoms so I may purse that.
They did suggest Lyrica however I was reluctant to do that again as I now take 2000 mg of mycophenolate mofetil per day and the episodes were more sparstic.
I am 5’6” weight 148 exercise daily , eat well and am a 72 year old female . Now… mu A1C is 5.7 so pre- diabetic. It is now more than confusing to determine what is causing these burning / tingling episodes. Getting back to the Hashimoto’s I have notice that when the burning starts it coincides with a raspy voice. I am guessing it is all an autoimmune flare.
I feel frustrated, tired and some days really miserable with no relief from the burning/ tingling through my body. I try to stay positive and remember I do have some stretches of time where I feel really good.
Autoimmune issues are so frustrating as there is often little that can be done, at least that is my experience and I have seen Doctors at Mayo for over 30 years.
If anyone has IGA Vasculitis I would be interested in hearing about your experience and treatment.
One day at a time, find the joy and beauty in the day, belief you are stronger than these pesky diseases and ask for God’s help, strength and peace.
Good luck to all!

I am sorry to learn of your health related suffering. I had the good fortune of finding a book that described the probable route of my multi-symptom scleroderma.
Recently, I re-read a book about other multi- symptom illnesses that include Hashimotos. It helped me, Reghan O’Rourke’s The Invisible Kingdom:Reimagining Chronic Illness. It is in paperback. I hope that reading this book helps you too.

@mary7026 Has anything gotten better for you since you last posted? Especially your sugar and insomnia. Are there any workshops near you where you could meet some women and start having a more involved life? I’m thinking of senior centers that are full of activities that I think you would like!

@lkhorton01 I have an appointment in a couple weeks with my endocrinologist numbers were good four months ago, but I don’t care what it says on paper. It’s not how I feel. I think I’m having a problem with the T3 T4 conversion. I do need eye salt because I don’t drink enough water so I need a little bit more electrolytes.
I will admit I do eat too much sugar. I went towards that when I quit smoking 11 years ago almost 12 I have insomnia so I can’t sleep nine hours in the dust too much sleep for me. I can function on seven, but I don’t even get that. my mind can’t stop. I have ADHD going on so along with the other CRPS, sciatica Hashimoto’s.
I try to get my exercising but a lot of days I’m really too tired because I don’t sleep well because of my insomnia and I don’t know what to do about that. I think I need to talk to somebody.. I do take care of the grandkids a couple days a week but ever since I get the sciatic in the CIPS has gotten worse. It’s hard for me to move as quick as I used to.
I do eat some vegetables, mostly salad, salads, and broccoli. I’ve always been a picky eater so can’t deal with certain things. I do have my smoothies, but they’re frozen and make them when I freeze them. That’s my fruits. I’m trying, but I live alone and I guess I need a little more motivation. I have nobody to push me and I’m not very good with myself.

Hi Mary! You sound overwhelmed. I know what that feels like. And it seems like your brain just won't shut down and let you rest! You said "I think I need to talk to somebody." Maybe that's your answer. I have a good therapist who helps me with anxiety disorder and PTSD. Sometimes we need another person to tell us we're being too hard on ourselves and how to make changes one step at a time. It's very kind of you to help with your grandkids. Not sleeping well can impair every part of our lives. I will be thinking of you and hope you will post again soon with some news of progress and a plan to "be very good with yourself."

Good Morning,
I have was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s several years ago, Recently I have been diagnosed with IGA Vasculitis so between the two there are days that I refer to as”not being able to get my feet underneath me” having such a lack of energy. I have also experienced the GI problems and not wanting to go for my morning walk after breakfast and coffee. It occurs after other meals but primarily breakfast.

It can definitely be a depressing a situation. I don’t mean to make this sound trite or belittling but sometimes there are things we must live with that cannot always be cured. What we can do is try to control all those things that we can:
Even if we don’t feel like it GET SOME EXERCISE there is research that definitely says the endorphins help us to feel better.
Write down what we eat. Often time the calories are higher than we think and the salt content is extremely high. DRINK water and keep your body hydrated.
Try to read something that gives us hope or inspiration in the morning or at some point in the day. We cannot go through these times alone and we need to lean on God for providing us with strength and courage.
Try to focus on one day at a time and even write down what was good in that day to help with our mind set.
If we find something that makes us feel better as far as a supplement or herb take it but perhaps talk to your pharmacist to know possible interactions with other medicines that you are taking.
Sometimes finding a new doctor that you can at least talk to and acknowledges our health issues can be beneficial.

There are so many people in this world struggling with horrific health issues and not all can be cured. I have struggled with Hasimoto’s , autoimmune issues for years and now recently IGA Vasculitis. We can ask why us but that doesn’t help and puts our minds in a defeating mind set. No doubt there are bad days ,weeks and years. Take it a day at a time and do EVERYTHING that we can that we can control to help our situations.

Auto immune issues are really a struggle and not cured but “handled”.
Believe me I almost never feel good but cherish the days that I do and know that those days are possible. Keep advocating for yourself, take with others and if possible find a group or individual that can help you with support. Also PRAY for strength, courage and patience to help you through the toughest days but we must be honest with what we are doing to help ourselves.

I have struggled with these issues for years. Know that it is possible even if there is no real “fix”. I know this may not be the response you might want to have heard but I can tell it can all help.

@jahm Your words and insights are priceless and so well stated. My sentiments exactly after years of Hashimoto's with several debilitating relapses. Cherishing the bright moments and mindful practice of embracing the "now" is all we've got. In my darkest days of excruciating bone and muscle pain, there is always something to be grateful. So many folks suffer far beyond what we can imagine.

Thank you for such strength and encouragement. You are a blessing and inspiration to this community!
