Posted by donnabutcher @donnabutcher, Aug 22 9:57am

How long did it take for small basal cell Mohs to heal..that you needed to wear bandage?
Any scar prevention tips?
How long until you can use makeup?

@donnabutcher: I understand your concerns; I've had several Mohs procedures including a few on my face. Can you tell me more about the area you're having treated?

This is a general guideline about what to expect during and after Mohs: https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/mohs-surgery/about/pac-20385222

Your medical provider will give you individual instructions for post-op care which is usually to keep a pressure type dressing on for up to 48 hours, thereafter keep in clean and dry and apply a moist base (vaseline, Aquaphor or the like according to directions) then cover with a bandage. Applying ice to the area for 15 minutes at a time to prevent swelling may be helpful, as well as keeping your head elevated while sleeping for the first few nights; avoid heavy exercise until cleared to do so. Since you'll likely have sutures, which may be self-disoloving or will require removal by the provider, best to avoid makeup or at least keep away from the surgical site until then. These are all good questions to discuss with the practitioner performing this technique on you.

Since sutures used in Mohs are usually quite small, the scar is generally quite light and definitely fades in time so give yourself up to 10 weeks or even more to fully assess what the final results may look like. There are products that can help with scars such as silicone based ointments. I'd suggest discussing any particular brands with your provider? They may have a preferance based upon experience.

When is your Mohs scheduled?

@lildi1961: Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, I see you're new here and responding to suggestions I'd offered to @donnabutcher when she'd inquired about post-op Mohs care and possible scar treatment.

Can you tell me more about yourself, your diagnosis, the area you had treated, what your medical provider advised and your concerns?

Hi @lildi1961 ,
I had Moh’s done on my left side of face on my left cheek last December 2025. It was very noticeable for a while and still looked pink after even nine months. I wore a bandage for a while, then mineral sun screen and scar tape which helped flatten the wound I think. I still keep it out of the sun and if I am going to garden, I wear mineral sunscreen and the scar tape and of course, my big hat. Before I read any of these comments this morning, I took. Photo of it for my photo log of my wound. It has become a lot less noticeable over time, but it certainly did take time for that to happen!

Had Mohs on forehead and near left ear. Both healed nicely. Have a melanoma removal coming up Friday which will be too big to close. Had biopsy a few days ago for another area. Hope it's benign.
