Off Prednisone but still feeling new type of pain
I've been off Prednisone for 6 months. (I was on Prednisone for 3.5 years). My blood inflammation markers have been normal for years and multiple Rheumatologists and doctors all said I no longer had PMR. So I went off steroids.
So now the question: Has anyone else gone off Prednisone but still plagued with mysterious aches and pains (muscles and joints - but not as severe or similar to PMR)? It's something else, I think.
I can get along okay during the day, but first thing in the morning I'm very stiff and it hurts to move. Also if I sit too long, then the same thing happens. Once I get moving it gets better quickly. Although throughout the day knees, hips and upper arms can occasionally hurt. I can't do things like I used to.
I've seen so many doctors who can't tell me what's wrong.
anyone else?
I don't want to go back on Prednisone and I don't want to resort to other drugs, but quality of life is definitely suffering. So wondering if maybe I should be taking some sort of medication (not Prednisone).
any suggestions?

I have been off prednisone for about four months and still have shoulder pain throughout the day but much more noticeable at night and early in the morning. I am hoping that this will eventually subside and I definitely do not want to go back on prednisone.
Go for aqua PT if you can. Did wonders for me.
Keep at it, hard but you goooooo.

Marissa
So sorry to hear that exercises haven't helped. I do take Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM to help with joint health and mobility. Seems to help. I'm not a dr nor nurse . I just look up info and do try a few suggestions but not all. I am allergic to many meds so .....
GOOD LUCK !!
@abbeyc you give me hope. I am still on a taper down to 7 mg of prednisone and I currently am doing resistant training and feel so much better. However, I'm very interested in your HRT. May I ask your age? I'm 75 and most recently started taking progesterone for sleep and it seems to be working. Wondering if I should go ahead and start estrogen also. You sound like you have gotten everything under control and I'm very much intrigued. 😊

1 Reaction@notaquita I’ve been on HRT since my mid 50s to control osteoporosis . I’m now 64. I believe it helps in many other ways too and I had heard of many women complaining about body aches including shoulder pain before getting put on HRT. This is one reason I wanted to see about increasing my dosage.
There are many resources out there on HRT including support groups and the decision to go on HRT is personal . I would research if it’s the right thing for you. Some say you need to start in your 50s. Some say you can start anytime. And you need to find the right type of doctor who specializes in HRT. Not a GP. good luck!
I’m down to 3 mg of pred. This is my second time tapering. I’m in real pain every morning. After being up a while it calms down but doesn't disappear. My markers are way down for a long time now. These pains are not the same as the original PMR pain. I take plenty of vitamins and supplements and really want to get off pred. I’m so frustrated. I get my 5 mile walks in but it’s hard to get it started. I have to push thru. I’ll try anything you folks recommend.

2 Reactions@mezack25 I feel for you. This sounds exactly where I was 2 years ago. I actually had to look and see if I wrote this post.
How long have you had PMR/been on Pred?

1 Reaction@abbeyc diagnosed May 2025. The highest pred was 15 mg then 10 tapered to 2-3 then flare up. Back to 10. I don’t want to go there again. I can handle pain but am so over this.

1 Reactionyes, lots of mystery pains. Off pred since early september 2026. Mind you, I was (thankfully) only on pred for 5.5 months, so the tapering was relatively OK) Hair stopped falling out and the pain has moved around. From fingers to biceps to shoulders and yes, better quickly after getting up and moving around. Gym 5 days a week with both core and strength training, albeit with 2-3LB weights. The 'workout' pain is disproportionate to the light workout. Yes, the constant pain can really really wear you down. However, the alternative is muscle loss and loss of quality of life. It is a long and confusing road we are on. Hang in there, it does get better.
