How to deal with lung cancer after unsuccessful chemo/radiation?

Posted by andycapp @andycapp, Oct 19 9:52am

How do I deal with lung cancer now that I’ve been told that my cancer is untreatable?

After my SBRT treatment I container to hurt under my left shoulder blade and my collar blade close to my neck on my left side, as my left lung was the one with cancer. Upper left lung lobe.

hi @andycapp - that is difficult news to hear. have you received a second opinion? I think if it was me, I'd try to be seen at the best NIH/academic cancer center and see if they have any other ideas. remind me - did you ever have a biopsy to find out what your biomarkers are?

REPLY

Definitely get a second opinion at an NCCN cancer center and ask about clinical trials.

What’s NCCN?

@andycapp if you're still in San Francisco, UCSF and Stanford would be your closest options.

NIH National Cancer Institute:

@andycapp are you looking to start treatment again?

@edivebuddy Not only have newer modules began growing but a new mass has been detected in the other lung. This is in addition to a significant amount of fibrosis and emphysema. My oncologist has indicated that my lungs are in bad shape and I am not a good candidate for chemo or imuno therapies. I am beginning a relationship with the palliative care group within my Fred Hutch Cancer Center.

@andycapp I go to Fred Hutch, too. I'm glad you were able to connect with the palliative care team, but sorry to hear there aren't more treatment options.

Hi @andycapp
I’m so very sorry there are no other treatment options for you. Must be very difficult dealing with the emotions that I can only imagine must be on your mind.
Sending positive thoughts your way.
Huge hugs 🤗 Daisy

If you haven't had full next-generation sequencing (NGS), ask about a comprehensive panel or a liquid biopsy. Some newer trials focus on broader markers or Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs) target specific surface proteins on cancer cells rather than traditional gene mutations.

Have you asked about clinical trials there? Finding one elsewhere is more involved but you can get it done. That next Gen sequencing is the start of finding any new treatment that might be out there.

Until then. Try to do something every day to put a smile on yours or someone else's face.
