If this helps I was on alendronate for 5 years, forteo 2 yr., evenity for 1 yr., Prolia for 2+ yr.

Never any side effects.
Hope you find a great doc who can guide you through this.

Thank you. But I am very sensitive and my previous Rheumatologist said if I can’t tolerate Prolia , then I go to the next drug (I think fortes he said) if that doesn’t work for me then I can’t take any. I know I have to have treatment of some kind due to severe osteoporosis with a fragility fracture but I don’t want to deal with rebound effect with teeth and fractures. Again unfortunately I don’t trust any of those drugs.

Julie, are you saying that you have been on alendronate and Prolia. What was the sequence and how long on each. Sorry I am a bit confused 😕

Good luck to you! I think the prescriptions are more effective than nutrition alone and more effective than the non-prescription supplements.

My first Dexa scan, at age 67, showed lumbar spine -3.7 while both hips had low osteopenia. After 2.5 years of alendronate, plus eating more calcium rich foods, continued vitamin D supplementation and continued exercise (walking plus lifting weights), my lumbar spine stayed at -3.7 and hips improved to -1.9. Now I’ve taken Tymlos for 5 months, added physical therapy targeting spine fracture prevention, increased weight training, added 15 mg 3 times a day of vitamin K-2, and hope to schedule another Dexa in less than a year and a half.

So alendronate probably helped my hips improve and did not change my spine. I have not had any side effects from Tymlos or from alendronate.

I read about so much nutrition diets don’t know where to start or how much protein to eat or drink vitamin d and I’m not a 3 meal a day and eat snacks in between is it something I need to start doing anyone has a good idea of what kind of diet to do

Would your doctor offer some advice? Mine said to aim for 1200 mg of calcium daily, mostly from food, rather than supplements. She recommended I take Vitamin D supplements after blood testing.
Mayo Clinic has a great deal of online diet and nutrition info that may be helpful.

@zaileighfaith Here is what I do: I try to eat whole foods, not processed foods. My diet is mostly greens, veggies, and fruit and I also eat good sources of protein like salmon, eggs, beef (once a week), hummus, chicken, yogurt, milk. I aim for 60 to 80g of protein every day which is easy if you eat the protein foods mentioned above a couple of times a day.

I also eat whole grain bread but avoid sugar and things like pastries, baked goods, cookies, candy (although I do have a treat once in awhile but prefer good ice cream for that). For snacks, I'll eat a small piece of cheese with low sodium mixed nuts. I have hypercalciuria so I avoid high sodium foods.

Snacking is fine; just avoid highly processed foods and stick to "real" whole foods.

@julieilic If your doctor mentioned forteo I would think that could be the first drug in your plan as it is an anabolic or bone building medication. Then it could be followed by Prolia every 6 months, that is designed to lock in your gains from the bone builder. If not Prolia then one of the bisphosphonates, which I am trying hard to avoid., but a follow up drug is needed. I too am anxious about fractures and jawbone loss. Neither forteo nor tymlos (both anabolic) reports osteonecrosis of the jaw or femur fractures. Pretty much the other drugs after bone building have a rebound effect if you start them and then stop. That is particularly true of Prolia, at least that is what I have been told.

@gravity3 Did you take those drugs in the order in which you listed them? I'm on Tymlos and looking to the near future for my follow up drug. I mentioned Evenity to my rheumatologist but he did not seem to have much experience with patients who followed Tymlos with Evenity. My heart is healthy so I am leaning towards Evenity, but I worry that it too has a history of osteonecrosis. May I ask, are you currently on Prolia?
