On Reddit someone posted this title "What is an unsexy, raw reality of a long term relationship that nobody warns you about."

It got a lot of comments from people in long term relationships that were very moving. How about commenting here as well. (or you can read them on Reddit.)

or

Congratulations to those that can say "That's my marriage."

What's your score....How many out of these did you, do you have or did not have but wished you had have in your marriage??? 🤔
For myself....not a good score and why I'm single now and without the ups and downs that took me into a deep depression until I helped myself get out of it. My Mom once said 'You can be feel lonelier in an unhappy marriage than when single and alone."

@blm1007blm1007 Wow that's a really long list of very good things that can go into a loving relationship. I could never remember all of them or keep track of them. I guess I would just have to summarize them into one all-encompassing statement. Let's see, maybe something like this. "Love one another deeply, passionately, faithfully, and exclusively with all your heart and mind, for as long as you both shall live, and all those other things you listed will happen naturally, without even thinking about them." What do you think?

There are two stark realities I can think of. One is obvious: people grow old and die - and unless the two of you are in an unfortunate accident, one of you is going to end up without the other, 100 percent certain. When we get married, we think "this is it, forever", but it's not forever. There will be another chapter in life, eventually.

The other less morbid reality is that people change. They age (often poorly), and they may change as people. Sometimes it's better. I'm definitely a more mature, assured person at 67 than I was at 30. But sometimes it's worse, and your partner might not be the person you married.

It does take work to make sure that the two of you remain committed to being the best partners you can be. I remember many years ago, my friends and I were admiring (discreetly!) a very attractive woman who was walking by, and after she was gone, one of my friends said "somewhere, there's a guy who got tired of that." That really made me think. Saying "I do" is a real commitment, and you don't want to be the one who got "tired" of the other person.

@blm1007blm1007 32-33, depending on the day and our health at the time/moment. 😀 We've been, mostly. together for 59 years, since she was 17 and I was 19. We've been at least a dozen different people since we joined hands, but mostly we've lived within your criteria.

She is a brilliant visual artist and I am a wannabe musician/engineer. She is a hoarder and I would love to live in a camper and own as little as possible. She’s mildly extroverted and I am massively introverted. She can't be bothered to make friends, but loves parties, and I have a half dozen friends I trust totally but I can't wait to escape from a party. And so on ...

I feel that each marriage is as unique as the people in it. People do want different things from marriage, and have different needs and priorities even if these are never mentioned or explained. Some marriages are more practical, some more emotional, some are conventional, and some more individual. I've been happily married twice--widowed once. Both relationships have a fair amount in common but also very different in certain feelings and tone. Also the time of life of each marriage influenced each one. I'm very grateful to be with my second husband--a longer marriage than my first as my first husband died young. Losing my husband also made me--I hope and believe--more considerate and more appreciative of other people. Matrimony really isn't the perfect state for many, but when it works it is a true support in life.

I always believed and still do that true love happens when you meet someone who is truly your soulmate. Love is different for everyone and when I read all the responses here there’s no doubt about it, it really doesn’t matter if you like things that are different from your partner, it just gives you more to talk about. Everyone has heard the saying that opposites attract, there’s truth to this but it only applies if the opposites you have are tolerable. I was quick to put my opinion out there when this topic came up, I later felt very sad for what I wrote especially when I read some of the beautiful comments that came along afterwards, I sounded bitter and angry, truthfully I’m not this person by nature but typically I’m often in the habit of saying something before I carefully think it over. It’s been a pleasure reading all the responses that everyone has made and sharing a part of themselves, it opened up my mind and heart to the beautiful moments that I have shared with another person who I loved and lost far too soon, thank you all for reminding me that love is truly a eternally precious gift.
