How do you manage thick mucus? What else can I try?

How is everyone managing their thick saliva? The doctors tell me more water and a humidifier. I have done these things. Just recently, I started using a small personal steamer. It has helped. I was just wondering if anyone has anything else I could try?

@2313 I also have numbness in my face and the thick mucus and excess saliva. My care team, said I could buy a suction machine. I cannot spit and have a hard time swallowing. But I keep telling myself I am alive. Love all the suggestions and also this site has made me realize it could be worse. i have an obturator which is adjusted all the time and I still get leakage and fluid comes out my nose.

@roxanne43 this makes me feel so ashamed! I am 2 weeks out of surgery, and I can swallow, spit etc. Mucus is a problem but I just take out the obturator, clean my mouth, spit and put the thing back in. I also don’t require any follow-up treatment as the pathology came back with no cancer . I feel for you going through all this!!

@jadwyer I did not have excess saliva or trouble swallowing until I was 2 years out of surgery. Had 33 radiation treatments because cancer had touched the bone. I did not want radiation because of all the side effects but surgeon stated he wanted me to have it to be more positive that the cancer will not come back. So I did it. I was good for a long time then I noticed swallowing was getting difficult. Had months of therapy for speech and swallowing. Learning to do something that just comes normal is very hard to learn. Now the mucus is an issue too. For some reason God gave me this cross to bare. I can get a suction device but am managing so for with sponge swabs.

Our circumstances are different but a nebulizer can help with thickness mucus if your doctor agrees. I have Bronchiectasis and just started a week ago.

Hope you find relief.

@stl yes, I have one. I never thought about trying that. What medicine did you Dr prescribe for you to use in it? Thank you very kindly!

@2313 I have one also,,,Ipratropium 0.02% nebulizer sol.

Will go back to that, Doctor said it was not in my chest. I guess I quit it because all the things I have to do keeping my mouth clean after eating takes so much time,, along with orastretch exercises. Not the life I bargained for.

@2313 hello I am using sodium chloride inhalation solution, USP 3%. for a week now. It’s helping but not completely gone. I think the smallest mucus is the hardest to clear.
I pray you find relief and healing soon.

@2313 @roxanne43, it is important to note that @stl’s cause for thick mucus is due to a chronic lung condition called bronchiectasis. Mucus caused by head and neck cancer treatments is not from the same cause as lung conditions, thus nebulizing may not be effective. Please check with your doctors.

Thank you, pharmacist told me this morning that the drug and nebulizer wont work on the mucus from my cancer treatment.

She said There is nothing else that will work. Don't know what kind of physician to see.
