Rectal Prolapse surgery - surgery and life after
I am a 57 year old strong healthy female. I thought I had hemorrhoids and was treated 3 times for them before I was told I had a rectal prolapse. I really wasn't even sure what this was but was told he would not perform surgery. I can't say exactly why because at the time I didn't know enough about the situation to even ask. So here I am wondering what to do - I read online that you can not live with this forever, it will get worse. I also read that the older you are the harder the recovery. I also read it's not 100% fixable, you could create a worse situation. I would love to hear anyone's story - did you do surgery? How did it go? Did you do therapy? etc. Thank you.

Hello @mhafg, I had a hysterectomy with two years ago when I was 54. I was diagnosed with a uterine prolapse as well as a bladder and rectal prolapse. I had no idea my rectum was prolapse but have been chronically constipated forever. My surgery went very well and I recovered pretty fast. I exercise daily and I started walking on a treadmill 5 days after surgery. I’m very happy with the results.

3 ReactionsThank you for sharing! I'm glad everything went well and it sounds like your life is back on track. That is great news. I'm very early in this situation and crossing my fingers I can say the same thing! I wish you the best!

3 ReactionsMy rectal wall had collapsed as well as my vaginal wall so I had surgery 3 weeks ago. My prolapse was coming out of my vaginal area to the point where I had to push it back in when I had a bowel movement. I would really recommend pelvic floor physical therapy first (if possible) before having surgery. My recovery is going very slowly and for the 1st couple of weeks, I was in the shower about 8 times a day rinsing the fecal matter off my backside. I am 73 years old so I imagine it will take a bit longer to totally heal but once it does, I will no longer lift anything more than a gallon of milk and will take MiraLAX on a daily basis. Good luck to you!
