I like to hear your story about fasting, fasting mimicking and Cancer
In 2023 I participated in a study that is looking at the effect a fast mimicking product had on Crohn's disease. Because of that study I started reading about the health benefits of extended fasting. Twelve months after participating in that study I was diagnosed with cancer and was advised to have chemotherapy. I choose to fast around my treatments. The research in breast and colon cancer indicated people who fast had fewer side effects. From chemotherapy. In theory fasting may help the chemotherapy be more effective, but we don't know for sure if that yet.
I'm post chemotherapy. I am receiving a targeted treatment for maintenance, but honestly the cancer I have doesn't respond long term to chemotherapy. The prognosis is poor and it doesn't matter if chemotherapy or radiation was given most people have recurrences and don't live very long.
I am all in on alternative therapies. I am staying with natural therapies at this point. Mostly lifestyle changes.
I am going to make fasting for extended periods part of the plan.
I'm interested in a discussion about fasting as a medical treatment. How do you do it. How frequently is it done. What papers have you read on fasting? What are you learning about fasting.?
Thanks for responding
Denise

Hi @donovanduncan Welcome to Connect. Thanks for joining the conversation about different approaches to diet and their impact on cancer.
Have you personally been diagnosed with cancer? Have you had success with Dr Seyfried’s keto diet?

4 Reactions@stage4survivor I would like to get more information about your story? I didn’t know if I was misunderstanding or not but when you did the fasting and the spiritual praying that your tumors were not there after? i’m going through breast cancer that spread to my spine. They also tell me stage four, but I’m not accepting it. I’m still waiting for my miracle. You’re the only thing that can help me is prayer and food because I can’t do chemotherapy.
@beebe I just bought Dr. Longo‘s book fasting cancer. I haven’t started it yet I will start it tomorrow probably. I can’t do chemotherapy like most people I have reoccurring breast cancer that went to my spine. Had a major spine surgery so my hope is something that can help me slow down or stop the lesions. Can’t do the hormone suppressing pills either. Prayer, Faith and food the right kind to try to keep this under control is the only thing I have. Still praying for a miracle desperately looking for what can help and I’m hoping my mother is right she said I would have that miracle.

1 ReactionI am intrested in seeing that fasting improves response to chemotherapy and reduces side effects. I started fasting within a window of 111am- 7pm 24 days ago when i had my 4 immunotherapy infusion of Pembrolizumab and Levantine, Chest Ct scan ordered for assessment purposes showed stable /?progressive distant carcinoma sarcoma in the lungs.
It was determined by my oncologist that I transition to systemic Platinum based chemotherapy with Nab Paclitaxel + Carboplatin at the end of the 4th cycle.
Although I was scared of my neuropathy from my 2024 july to November chemotherapy on ordinary Paclitaxel + carboplatin I decided it was time to adopt an additional protocol of intentional change in lifestyle in a moy organised fashion to get ready for the transition and boost out come. My focus was to rev up my immunity system to combat the aggressive cancer from all sides, drawing strength from practitioners of integrative treatment. I have heard a lot of survivors stories who relied on intermittent fasting. Since I already have slow motility of my bowels and early satiety, I make sure my menu is nutrition drce so I get my protein requirement of 110-120 grams of protein daily to maintain my muscles and 85 kg weight.
Im expecting to have built up some resserve to reduce chemo induced fatigue also apart from weakening the cancer cells . Im 100% hopeful my efforts wil pay off.
More than anything I also pray anfd draw faith from God’s healing powers as a Christian. The fact that the body is actually designed to protect itself , also has a strong influence on my faith regardless of all the negative stories out thete.

1 ReactionI did 3-day water fasts or the 5-day Prolon fasting mimicking diets before and after each of my 6 chemo infusions. I believe this lessoned my symptoms. I did not need any of the 2 nausea medications prescribed, nor any of the prescription mouthwash for mouth sores. I had fatigue for about a week between cycles, but I was able to travel to FL and the Northeast between each session. I also lost 85-90% of my hair. Otherwise, I faired well.
I also use intermittent fasting for 14-16 hours a day to minimize weight gain from the hormone depreciation therapy I am on for prostate cancer. This, diet and exercise works well for me.
I wish you the very best of luck!
