Hair thinning more on Prednisone? Any ideas to slow or help?

Posted by boomermeg @boomermeg, Sep 18 1:37pm

Since starting Prednisone on 7/31/26, I've noticed recently that my hair has thinned even more than usual right on top, in the front near my forehead and part.
Anyone else have hair thinning and any ideas to slow, or help? Thank you all. Blessings.

Here is what I found on Sharper Image. Looks like they have a sale going on right now, lucky for you! I started seeing new hair growth within 4 to 6 weeks. You have to use it faithfully every other day, the instructions are easy to follow. I have been using it for 11 months. The new follicles are still working and the new hair is around 6 inches long or so. More coming in. Patience is required.

I was losing quite a bit of hair, but when I got down to somewhere around 7mg of Prednisone it stopped

Thanks so much! It gives encouragement to hear!
Another thing I just thought of my hairdresser told me years ago. When our hair is wet it's at it's most vulnerable to come out. So I'm going to be extra careful when wet and try to be very gentle when combing or styling it. Thanks for sharing your experience and encouragement. Blessings.

Thanks for sharing. I just looked up Nutrafol side effects and personally, after all the PMR and now side effects possible with Prednisone, I'd rather not ingest anything with the possible issues it mentions but hopefully they're be something that can help. Thanks again for letting us know about it. Blessings.

@boomermeg I understand... but people have said your hair will grow back regardless.. after pred taper.

My hair is growing back in but went from thick straight hair to new growth that is curlier and frizzy. I have no idea what to do with this “new” hair! But thankful it’s coming back.

Yes, I too experienced hair loss. I started taking biotin and washing & conditioning my hair with DIVI (based out of Texas) - I bought a sample box at Ulta. It also comes with a serum. I started tapering the prednisone. My hair is now coming back in, new growth.

As soon as I went off prednisone my hair was falling out quite excessively. It took approximately six months for it to start growing back and it grew back quite healthy. Unfortunately, I’m back on prednisone and my hair started falling out again.

I'm so sorry about your hair, and especially sorry you have to go back on Prednisone. Anyone old enough to remember the book and original movie "Catch 22?" That's where I feel like I am. In "Catch 22" land.
Blessings.

@elizabethannr are you serious? This works? How long total have you been using it? Thank you.

@pmrnew I've been using it for about a year. It has to be used regularly according to directions and it is a slow process but my husband has been having some success on his bald spot and I have some new hair now so it just requires patience and not expecting too much the first few months.

Have been using topical minoxidil liquid (applied w/ dropper) prior to diagnosis of PMR April’26. Continues to work however I now have to apply it to more areas. Have lost quite a bit of hair in the center of my scalp since my diagnosis.
