Hair thinning more on Prednisone? Any ideas to slow or help?

Posted by boomermeg @boomermeg, Sep 18 1:37pm

Since starting Prednisone on 7/31/26, I've noticed recently that my hair has thinned even more than usual right on top, in the front near my forehead and part.
Anyone else have hair thinning and any ideas to slow, or help? Thank you all. Blessings.

Happening to me as well. Haven’t figured out what to do. Been on pred since May 2025. My hair is really thin. Rheumatologist has no suggestions. Some folks say once off the pred it starts to grow back. I guess we’ll see.

Have been on pred since December 2024, started on 25 mg, now down to 3 mg. At first the same thing happened to me. Gobs of hair going out every time I shampooed or combed. It was so frustrating as I have always had a good head of hair. Then I bought an infra red hair comb device from Sharper Image, the infra red is supposed to wake up the follicles. You use it running through your scalp every other day. My hair is now almost back to normal. My husband who was receding from his forehead back to being downright shiny, has begun to sprout new hair where there hasn't been any in years.

bet I have lost 1/4 or my hair. Coming out in clumps. Prednisone starting 3/20/26 and last dose 9/9/26 The clumps coming out seem to have lessened after tapering, though it still feels really thin. Mind you, last 6 weeks instead of lowering dose I took 6 days only, next week 5 days only and so on. So all of August was already taking way less pred. Hoping my hairdresser will tell me that little short fuzzies show the hair is growing back. Hope you get of this miracle/horrible drug soon

Yes, my hairs are everywhere and it's not my imagination. We discussed this in a facebook group I belong to,and it's common. Many have said that Nutrafol has helped. And they all said it grows back after stopping prednisone. But that infrared comb sounds good!

Thanks for sharing. I've read that too. Hopefully we'll get some hair back once we get off Prednisone. I just hope I don't need a wig before then.....

Thanks for sharing. I just looked up Nutrafol side effects and personally, after all the PMR and now side effects possible with Prednisone, I'd rather not ingest anything with the possible issues it mentions but hopefully they're be something that can help. Thanks again for letting us know about it. Blessings.

Thank you for sharing. I think little fuzzies are wonderful! New hair growth as far as I know. I've had them before right up along my forehead. I'll take any new hair! I hope your hairdresser does tell you that it's new growth. So glad you're already off Prednisone. May it stay that way for you. Blessings.

Thank you so much for sharing about the infared comb. I wonder if it'd help while still on Prednisone. I just started 7/31/26, so I've got awhile to go.
I'd love to be able to try to keep it from getting much worse while taking Prednisone. Will look into the comb.
Thanks again, and glad you're down to 3mg. Blessings.

I was losing quite a bit of hair, but when I got down to somewhere around 7mg of Prednisone it stopped

Thank you for that info. I’m going to look into it. Did it take you long to see some progress? Good luck. 👍
