FYI - If BHRT has Been Recommended by Your Doc for Bone Protection

Posted by CathyF31 @cathyf31, 4 days ago

Recent 2026 clinical updates support a "case-by-case" evaluation to use a transdermal estradiol patch for bone loss prevention over a rigid age cutoff, especially when standard osteoporosis therapies are contraindicated or inappropriate (supported by the FDA, NIH, The Endocrine Society, and The Menopause Society).

The Menopause Society notes MHT does not need to be routinely stopped at age 60 and can be used past 65 for bone protection after individual review. Because transdermal patches bypass liver metabolism, they maintain a neutral thrombotic profile, making them the preferred route over 60.

Note: If the patient has an intact uterus, micronized progesterone would need to be paired with the patch for complete endometrial protection.

I’m starting HRT and progesterone today. I spoke with a NP from Midi Health who seemed more knowledgeable than my Endocrinologist. I’m using the gel though as we cant find the patches where I live. The NP said she doesn’t even prescribe the patch anymore because it’s too hard to find. She said it also bypasses the live so that was good news. My spine is -2.7 and hips -2.0. I’m going to try HRT for a year and see if there is any improvement, along with diet and exercise. If not then I’ll take medication. Hopefully the HRT improve my numbers.

@rudysmom
Just keep in mind that spinal bone can show changes sooner than hip, you should take that into consider after a year of HRT. As the hip map be slower to reflect improvements.

@rudysmom I started HRT 2.5 years ago, along with weight, balance and impact training.y DEXA scores were -2.6 right hip lowest 2 .5 years ago. Now that hip is -2.1. my bone fit PT says HRT is a power house. Good luck.

@maryandnans
Thanks. That’s so encouraging! I workout 6 days a week. 2 of those days I walk and the other days I walk and workout to Dr Lisa Moore. Started with 5lb weights, moved up to 8lb and just started incorporating 10lb to my routine.

I started with BRICKHOUSE BONES too. Now I have a personal trainer at the gym to be able to use more heavier weights.
