Skin pain on back/side of neck

Posted by sean_mj @sean_mj, Dec 15, 2018

Hello all - I just started dealing with this problem yesterday but it’s concerning me.

I have pain on the back of my neck, near the base of my hairline, and it travels down a little. At first, it really felt like a rash. It’s not itchy at all though, and there’s no sign of a rash. No bumps, no nothing. But touching the area hurts... I recently wore a necklace with a different chain and I thought that could be the problem so I took it off, but it didn’t relieve anything. When I press on it, it hurts, making me think it’s muscle and not skin, but it really feels like it’s on my skin even though there’s nothing to show.

And the pain isn’t like soreness, like whiplash or I slept on my neck wrong. It’s like I can move my head freely but touching that one particular area gives off a slight “burning” pin pricks feeling.

I’m not diagnosed with anything else, so I’m not sure where this is stemming from or what’s causing it. I’m open to any suggestions or ideas. If it continues to persist, I will be going to the doctor. Thank you for reading!

For the last 7 to 10 days, I have had pain in my neck area also. Painful to the touch. Right side of head. Starting at a level top of my ear and skin behind it. It extends down my neck to my clavicle. Maybe 6 or 8 inches wide. It includes my nape, neck, top of shoulder and ear. No other symptoms associated with it. The pain is similar to a sunburn or a rug burn. It is annoying because my clothing brushes my skin and it hurts. When I lay down to sleep it is present. Have appt to see dr tomorrow.

@damnright I’m experiencing this exact same thing and Google is freaking me out a bit. Do you mind sharing what the outcome of this neck sensitive was after your appt?

@cfilangi Hi. It went away after another week. I suspect it was a strained muscle from carrying my daughter on my neck and shoulders.

@damnright Thank you! This definitely helps! I suspected strained muscle at first until I started looking online. Going to see my doctor this week but your comment makes me feel much better. Thanks!

The pain you describe may be following the course of a nerve.
If you can get prompt attention the doctor may consider shingles without
a rash. Treating you with antivirals at an early stage may help and additionally
you could get help with pain management.

This is what I did for the tenderness on my neck(right side also). It’s similar to what I felt the first time I had shingles. That time there was physical evidence in the form of the rash. Thankfully the doctor recognized the symptoms after he’d suffered the same thing in the past. Got me on antivirals and I was spared the agony most people have.
I’ve been suspected to have it a few years ago and it’s the same thing this time but no rash. I’ve heard that the rash isn’t always external and wondered if that’s what this was.
Currently on antivirals for 5 days now and no improvement. Can’t remember the length of time it took to feel better the other two times. I REALLY need to stop putting off the vaccination.
I hope this is helpful to someone, somehow.
