Anyone reversed osteoporosis without medication?

Posted by wishmeluck001 @wishmeluck001, Aug 26 12:14am

Hello. I am 39 and last year I got diagnosed with osteoporosis due to breastfeeding and pregnancy. i did all the tests nothing else was found as the root cause. It’s one lt the unexplained ones. During the last year, i did resistance exercises and tried to get enough calcium and vitamin D. My spine z score improved from -3.1 to 2.7, T score didn’t improve ( at least when they rounded to one digit) but hip got worse from -2.5 to -2.6.

I am now thinking if i should start medication. But given my age my doctor suggests i wait for another year to see if it can improve. I am so scared, i have a toddler. I am thinking what if i break my back or hip and get disabled because of broken hip. Who would look after my child.

Just wanted you to hear if anyone was able to reverse osteoporosis without medication? Or anyone you know in person. That I can trust that’s possible.

I would make sure you are doing strength training, taking not only calcium and vitamin D3 but K-2, Zinc, Magnesium, Boron, enough protein and making sure your 3 levels are optimum at around 46 to 60 level.

@petitefitsmartfemale can I ask what you are taking or took?
I'm on Envinity injection's and possibly had a mini stroke last week, waiting to go in for CT and Curated artery imaging. I will ask my bone dr. To do something different or going solely on Osteo Sustain. It promotes healthy bone formation and bone matrix and mineralization. I will present this to her and see what she says. I will be on #6 injection. I don't want to be on any medication AT ALL.

@wishmeluck001 @wishmeluck001 I was able to reverse it partially with just exercise, nutrition and supplements, but I was spending 20-25 hrs a week on it, and I don't know if that is realistic for someone with children and/or working (i'm retired). I was able to get from a total spine of -3.1 to -2.6, then -2.2 over a year and a half, then my Dr said I really need to try Tymlos to build up the bone. I've further improved the -2.2 to -1.7 and now -1.5 while still doing all the exercise and nutrition stuff and adding Tymlos for 11 months (so far). I'm blessed to be able to have the meds and time to fix myself. I can say that I was taking my supplements/vitamins incorrectly, and not getting enough protein (didn't know it was necessary for bone formation), so I fixed all those things, now TRY to get 100g protein every day (I never can consume that much). You do need to find a Dr who specializes in OP if possible. There are also physical therapists who specialize in OP, so that is a possibility. Good luck to you, I wish you the best!

@lemondrop , When I was told I had osteopenia near the end of 2019. the special doctor that my gynecologist sent me to, did not try to figure out the cause or what I could do naturally but automatically ordered generic Fosamax but told me to not take it until I talked to my orthodontist since I was just starting treatment for my teeth as I was going to have jaw surgery to fix my bite before getting 2 implants that a very bad dentist caused me to lose two teeth. I needed to have the jaw surgery years ago, but my mom died when I was 16 as I was told to wait until I was 16 to 18. I did not have insurance to get this done. The treatment was pulling my teeth out as I did not realize they were loose from bone loss. I lost the money I spent, and the jaw surgeon backed out from doing my jaw surgery. I had two scans since then , and my bones got worse with increasing osteoporosis. Finally, since I was getting dental work done, I asked my out of state friends what they were doing. One started weight training and supplements and was able to reverse her osteopenia. Another saw her mother so crippled from Osteoporosis and since she is petite also, she started during the Pandemic, strength training and vitamins, supplements and eating right and she is the same age as me 64 and has normal bones. My other friend was able to keep her osteopenia stable and she is about 10 years older than me with what her gynecologist subscribed so I have been following what she has been doing, as well as adding a few extra supplements from a friend that is in her early 70's and has good bones as a result. I am on several Facebook Osteoporosis groups, and I have seen reversal of Osteoporosis to Osteopenia from what I have been doing. My friend wanted to know my D3 levels. I had no idea I was so low! I wish a doctor would have pointed this out. I am sure that is one of my problems since I stay out of the sun. I have another script for a bone scan good for another year. I am going to wait to get it when my D3 levels have gone up from the 30.7 that they are now. I want to have at least a 60 level. Hence, I am going to Orange Theory Fitness since December 2024 around 5 times per week. had to take off 6 weeks in 2025 due to Shingles. I have gotten so much stronger and my hips stopped hurting and I can tell my scoliosis (I wore a back brace as a child) has stayed stable since it had been getting worse. I am proud of myself and not sure what my next DEXA scans will be or if I will have to consider bone medicine but for now, I am trying to do it the natural way. I wish I could also take hormones, but my gynecologist will not let me since have the BRCA1 cancer gene and my mother died from ovarian cancer at age 44, my mom's sister died of breast cancer at age 46 and my mom's sister's daughter had ovarian cancer and tested positive for the BRCA1 gene. She is the one who was able to share my results to get the insurance company to cover my test. This is the first time my pelvic transabdominal/transvaginal year annual screening did not look good so I am getting more procedures at the end of this month to see the results and decide if I will have a hysterectomy. For now I am spacing out my Vitamin D3, Calcium Citrate (as well as getting more calcium from foods, Ensure Max Protein, trying to eat form 70 mg to 100 mg of protein per day, Taking from 180 mcg to 200 mcg of Vitamin K-2 MK-7 and 5 grams of Vitamin K-2 MK-4, 3 Mg Boron, 300 Mgs Magnesium, 10 MG of Iron when I wake up with vitamin C (that is when I take the Boron and 1,000 MG of L-Lysine to see if it helps prevent shingles again), 2 mini multivitamins spaced 2 hours apart of the other supplements. I take the Magnesium at night. I will update everyone on my next DEXA scans and what I plan to do if they are worse.

@petitefitsmartfemale Hello and thank you for your input.
I really do not think my numbers are all that bad bur felt rushed into getting Envinity to make my bones stronger ASAP at 65. I have always been very active until my spine fusions 13 yes ago and even then still active. I was an avid runner.
The skinny on my Density numbers
AP Spine L1 - L4 BMD T Score BMD T Score Adjusted for TBS
-1.1 -0.4
Hip/Femure
L : Neck -2.8 -2.4 kinda high
L : Total -2.1 -1.7
R : Neck -2.4 -2.0
R : Total -1.9 -1.6
So with these numbers I really don't think they are high compared to others that I have seen.
I have never been a good eater at all. I get my dinner in because and occasionally I get fast and rarely lunch. I do snack on yogurt with blackberries and watermelon now that it is in season.
My bone doc has me on 1200 MG of calcium citrate, D3 & K2 and on Thursdays D2 1250 mcg's. I tolder her that I try to eat but just can't.
I need to find supplements that has all that I need to take rather than taking 10 supplements to get what I need to maybe less than that. I can not swallow long pills as I have issues with them since I had Neck fusions, they can sometimes get stuck in my throat.
I am going to get back into the gym to do more routines. I walk 5 miles or more a day 5 days a week due to work.
As I'm reading your story, you are taking minerals. So the mag at night is that to help you sleep? I will take all of your story into consideration.

I so appreciate all that you have taken the time to tell your story.
Thank you

The magnesium is for my bones. This is what my friends have been taking. You should try Orange Theory Fitness classes if they are near you. I take some strength 50 classes, 1 tread class a week and 2G and 3G classes. Today was a 3G class which means three groups taught by Peter, who is a great coach. I started out with the rower, then when the groups were switched, I did the exercises on the floor using the weights that I got to choose for each exercise shown on the TV screens after the coach showed us how to do them (he corrected my form quietly in class as he makes sure no one gets hurt) and then the treadmill last. Most wear the heart monitor that goes on the arm and looks like a watch that connects with your equipment to show you what zone your heart is in. My muscles have improved and I am hoping my bones have also. I wish I could take all the vitamins and supplements at the same time but they need to be spaced out from one another to not compete with each other. Ensure Maximum Protein Nutrition shakes have either 30 MG or 42 MG of protein with calcium and Vitamin D3 and other vitamins. I try to have one after each class. Yesterday I did amazingly well in the tread class which is 50 minutes of the treadmill following exercises where you push, then go all out and then do walking recoveries. Some of the pushes, I did high inclines with walking since there is a card in front of each classmate on each treadmill that you follow and it tells you the incline for that exercise. Those that power walk always have a higher incline to get their heart rate up than those that jog. You have a choice or you can do a combination of both. It has helped me blood pressure. I like having good music, new routines, a great coach and motivating members.

@lemondrop , sorry about possibly having a mini stroke last week. I wish I started my strength/cardio routine and my protein/vitamin/mineral routine with my petite friend out of state did over 6 years ago. I wish a doctor would have told me to do this instead of trying to start me on medication right away that I was old not to take until I talk to my dental specialist so I never took the mediation.

I also have trouble swallowing pills since my neck surgery many years ago. I take sugar free calcium citrate, Vit D plus k2 is small and easy to swallow, and I do a lot of shakes with protein . Kate Farms for noon and the other two shakes I make using pea protein, alternate with 2 Tablespoons oat bran or flaxseed, in am, scoop of collagen with fortibone, 1/4 cup cooked cold broccoli, 1 cup almond milk and frozen strawberries (from Costco) In the pm I use 1/4 cup cooked cold Brussel sprouts and 1/2 cup frozen blue berries (from Costco) with the 1 cup almond milk, scoop pea protein. You could use whey protein if you prefer. This has helped me keep my weight down and I am on the treadmill 40 minutes each day. I use to jog prior to neck surgery and at 83 this is the best I can do and am so grateful

@petitefitsmartfemale Hello, I to wish I could have know all of it, instead of having me jump right into meds. I was set to have partial knee replacement and they wanted me to start the bone building so the hardware would take hold, but then I decided not to do the knee, might have to do the shoulder instead. This will be my 3rd shoulder surgery. The 1st 2 knew nothing about OS.
Thank you
