Anyone reversed osteoporosis without medication?

Posted by wishmeluck001 @wishmeluck001, Aug 26 12:14am

Hello. I am 39 and last year I got diagnosed with osteoporosis due to breastfeeding and pregnancy. i did all the tests nothing else was found as the root cause. It’s one lt the unexplained ones. During the last year, i did resistance exercises and tried to get enough calcium and vitamin D. My spine z score improved from -3.1 to 2.7, T score didn’t improve ( at least when they rounded to one digit) but hip got worse from -2.5 to -2.6.

I am now thinking if i should start medication. But given my age my doctor suggests i wait for another year to see if it can improve. I am so scared, i have a toddler. I am thinking what if i break my back or hip and get disabled because of broken hip. Who would look after my child.

Just wanted you to hear if anyone was able to reverse osteoporosis without medication? Or anyone you know in person. That I can trust that’s possible.

Has your PTH levels been checked? I'm assuming that your doc has done that, but just thoughtI'd ask, since my first doc didn't order that test. I had parathyroid tumor, which caused low absorption of calcium, and hence my osteoporosis. After the removal of the tumor, I tried a year of exercise (mostly treadmill). My spine got better, my hip stayed the same, and my femoral neck got worse. Your situation is different, tho; my osteoporosis was severe. Don't want to discourage you. Also, I think generally it takes two years to see a difference. Others can weigh in on this.

I was diagnosed in 2018 with Osteoporosis in the femoral neck (-2.8) in 2020 when I was retested it was -2.8 in 2023. I was retested it was -2.9 and then 2025. It was -2.8. I would stick with your strength training and make sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D. I also joined Osteostrong and have been doing that for three + years.

I am starting AlgaeCal bone supplements which seem to have excellent results along with PT for femur neck and hip. I walk 5000 steps three times a week and will increase that as weather permits…I feel the reclast and other meds are too risky

Has anyone tried Optimum Shilajit™ Bone Restore Formula and does it work

@vmcgrantham you might want to google it by asking if it is legit. There was a lot of info on it.

It can take a year after weaning to recover bone lost through breastfeeding. Like you, I'd want the reassurance that medication offers. If you aren't seeing an endocrinologist, you might ask for a referral.
Most of the drugs we are offered prevent bone loss, but do so at the disadvantage of preserving damaged bone that your body would otherwise eliminate.
Tymlos and Forteo offer the advantage of remodeled bone while being medication that you can quit without causing problems afterward.
Most women become osteoporotic because of the loss of estrogen which we begin to lose at around 30 years. Most of us with osteoporosis begin taking medications some years after 50. But then we have to keep taking medications for bone loss from then on.
It is possible that you'd regain bone with exercise, adequate calcium and magnesium, you might add K2 to protect your heart. With toddlers you might not have to worry so much about the exercise part, but it is a period of time when we are likely to neglect ourselves in many ways.
I don't know anyone personally who has lost bone at your young age. Your doctor is quite good to have caught the loss.
wishing you the very best luck

I would make sure you are doing strength training, taking not only calcium and vitamin D3 but K-2, Zinc, Magnesium, Boron, enough protein and making sure your 3 levels are optimum at around 46 to 60 level.

@wishmeluck001 @wishmeluck001 I was able to reverse it partially with just exercise, nutrition and supplements, but I was spending 20-25 hrs a week on it, and I don't know if that is realistic for someone with children and/or working (i'm retired). I was able to get from a total spine of -3.1 to -2.6, then -2.2 over a year and a half, then my Dr said I really need to try Tymlos to build up the bone. I've further improved the -2.2 to -1.7 and now -1.5 while still doing all the exercise and nutrition stuff and adding Tymlos for 11 months (so far). I'm blessed to be able to have the meds and time to fix myself. I can say that I was taking my supplements/vitamins incorrectly, and not getting enough protein (didn't know it was necessary for bone formation), so I fixed all those things, now TRY to get 100g protein every day (I never can consume that much). You do need to find a Dr who specializes in OP if possible. There are also physical therapists who specialize in OP, so that is a possibility. Good luck to you, I wish you the best!
