Ham string pain

Posted by marie @mariemarie, Sep 4, 2017

I do 4 hours per week of PEDALING FOR PARKINSON . My ham strings hurt all the time. The instructor said it's due in part to PD. My neurologist said to take Tylenol. He said pain due to exercising. Who is right? I do not take PD meds. Anyone experience pain in ham strings?

Teresa ... thanks for asking. No problem with ham string in last several days. Neurologist said try ibuprofen. That didn't work. He then wrote prescription for valium. That didn't work. He sent me to physical therapy. The therapist said most likely the bike seat is too low, I take Pedaling for Parkinsons classes three times a week. So went to class and raised the seat 3 1/2 inches. I continue going to PT for 3 more visits. Therapist said my ham strings were very tight. So hopefully the cause was the seat.

BTW y fitness center started a beginner tai chi class. is this good for PD folks.

Hope you are doing well.

Generally with Tai Chi you don't spend time on the floor (as with yoga), It involves slow, flowing movements which I enjoy. Some Tai-Chi classes are seated. There are some DVDs that are really good for Tai-Chi practice as well, you can also view Tai Chi on Youtube.

Here is an article from WebMD about the benefits of Tai-Chi in Parkinson's, https://www.webmd.com/parkinsons-disease/news/20120208/tai-chi-improves-symptoms-parkinsons-disease#1.

Yes, I'm glad that my hamstring problem is better as well. The PT that I'm seeing is a PD specialist and she is good. I'm working mainly on balance right now.

Take care and let us know how you do with Tai Chi - I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Hello All:

Our community moderator, @colleenyoung, (thanks, Colleen) found a great website that deals with leg pain and Parkinson's. Here is the link, How to Deal with the 6 Common Causes of Leg pain in PD? : By Dr. De Leon https://defeatparkinsons.com/2015/08/24/how-to-deal-with-the-6-common-causes-of-leg-pain-in-pd-by-dr-de-leon/ I wanted to share it with you all. It appears that there are many reasons for PD related leg pain and many different ways of relieving it. I have personally used physical therapy, stretching exercises, as well as massages.

How are you dealing with the pain of Parkinson's?

Interesting finding these comments as I have the same hamstring problem and asked about it through my medical doctor and it was brushed off. Well thanks to these groups I am finding that other people have the same symptoms or problems that I am having. Most of the time my right buttock area has this pulling or pain. I have a mild case of CP and have also recently been diagnosed with Camptocormia and figured it was related to that. Makes sense that since my right side is stronger than my left that being different lengths cause the pain when moving. Really starting to enjoy these group discussions. Maybe I will get my medical degree one day so that I can "help" my doctors understand that I am not the only one with my problems.

Hello and welcome to Mayo Connect and our discussion on hamstring pain. I can see by your post that you have two disorders, CP and Camptocormia.
As I was not familiar with Camptocormia I went on the web and found some information. Here is a link with more info: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2077380/

It appears that even people with Parkinson's can get this disorder.

Have you considered physical therapy? They can provide you with stretching and strengthening exercises that really make a difference.

Being an avid cyclist, I would first have the instructor check your seat height (and then your position on the bike - bike fit). Could be as simple as that...then go from there.
