Dehydration: What helps maintain hydration with bowel issues?

Posted by tj @tjanet, Nov 13, 2024

Any ideas of what can help with dehydration? I have short gut syndrome and get dehydrated a lot. According to a GI specialist plain water can make me more dehydrated. Fluids need to have sodium and glucose in them for my body to absorb.
I get constipated a lot when I get dehydrated.
Recently I started drinking coconut water and it's been helping my constipation.
I have 2ft. of my small intestines left,I have my large intestines still.
I am able to eat most foods. My diet has been high carbs, high protein low fiber. I need to gain weight also.

This is so enlightening. Thank you. I had a total colectomy nearly 60 years ago and have always had a fluid retention problem. I the last 3 years the large volume output is even worse. I use Pedialyte to some effect. However, sugar is not my friend. I also have type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, mild kidney disease and am prone to gout. So, in trying to fashion a diet that accommodates dietary restrictions for all of those ailments and urgent need to lose weight, I may have made the large outflow, fluid and nutrient problem worse with high protein high fiber eating. I thought the Mediterranean diet was a good idea, not so sure. I do have a recurrent feeling of upset tummy and am terribly fatigued all the time. One loperamide a day seems to help a bit. Off for some oatmeal right now. Good luck to you and thanks for your sharing.

I started drinking Body Armor and Powerade, along with my IV fluids 5 times a week. My dehydration seems to be getting better.
