Can anyone relate?

Posted by grasping @grasping, Aug 29 12:40am

First, I want to say that in my 67 years of life I have been to many Psychiatrists, therapists, doctors to try and get help for my lifelong depression, anxiety, very low self-esteem.
I have been on so many medications that have not worked because I have very severe IBS and cannot take them. I have read many self-help books. I have talked and talked, been honest and told everything. NOTHING has helped me and I get very frustrated with every website, chat, podcast that says get professional help with severe depression, this just does not work! I feel everyone is missing something or I am just too dense to understand what is told to me. I do not even think anyone I go to cares if they help me. I do not think I have been given the right diagnosis.
I will just say what I am going through daily and hope that someone out there can relate to me.
I look around and compare myself to everyone and come up short. I obsess all day, most every day, about how ugly I am, how stupid, boring. I feel like no one likes me. I am not fun, interesting or pretty, I think everything revolves around looks. I am very self-centered. I am shallow for thinking this way and hate that I cannot stop it. I have no talent and cannot do anything well.
I do not understand how people relate. I do not feel connected to anyone.
I am living with my ex-husband who drives me insane, although everyone else likes him. I am stressed because we do not like the same things, also, he wants sex and intimacy and I cannot give that to him, my body is too ugly, also I had to have a radical hysterectomy because of cancer and have no sex drive. This causes so much anxiety. I explained this all to him, but he does not understand. He tells me I am crazy. The reason I am living with him is because I cannot financially make it on my own and for some reason he wanted me back even after I left him.
I feel severe sadness when my 2 grown children do things without me. I cannot stop myself from pouring out my pain to my children because I have no one else to talk to. This makes me feel even worse. I am a horrible parent for doing this to my children.
The older I get the more bitter and angry I get because I have lived my life hating myself, wishing I could change everything about myself. I am angry that no one can help me. I am mad that others seem to like themselves, have friends, and have people that love them.
I try to tell myself to just live alone and not socialize with anyone. Do not look in the mirror so that I will not see myself. This is the only way I can live without losing my mind. Yet I want what others have so when I isolate myself, I end up crying all day.
I had alcoholic parents, I got married at 17 to get out of the house, I lost 2 children to crib death, I was born flat chested and all I ever wanted was to be pretty. I had implants that my body rejected several times so now, after having them removed, I look deformed. I have tried many surgeries to make myself look acceptable, be loveable.
I understand that many people have it worse than I. For some reason others deal with things, they grow up and do not put as much emphasis on looks. I cannot do that.
There are people who do not get help There are people that are just not nice. This is me.
Please, is there anyone out there who can relate?

Dear Grasping,
Good Day. It can be a good day despite the turmoil and self loathing you may feel. The simple answer is gratitude. Try being thankful for one thing today. Maybe two tomorrow and three the next day etc. We are all pitifully full of flaws but also worthy of life as much as any other living being on this planet. 🌏 It sounds so simple it can’t possibly help, right? If nothing else has helped I just ask you to give it a try. I am glad you reached out here and I hope with all my being that you can find your rightful place in this crazy world. Sending you a smile and hope for a better day today.

I found gratitude was the ONLY process that has gotten me through my cancer journey. Lobectomey in Feb. It was only 5 mos after my surgery when I learned I had metastases in both lungs, liver, spleen and now 3 tumours in my brain. I'm a non smoker and I am healthy otherwise.

At the very beginning, a friend reminded me about Gratitude. OMGoodnes, it has gotten me through such a fast and sometimes devastating test results. There are so many things in my life that so many folks could only dream of. Very supporting and caring adult kids and their grandchildren. An incredibly supportive husband. My birdwatching outside the window of my bed. Playing in my flower garden as much as I am able, but then finding a wonderful woman who cleans up gardens, knowing what she's doing. I could go on and on.
I would emphasize practising Gratitude to every person struggling in thier life.
One thing per day becomes hundreds of things the more we practise.

Wow, that sounds so much like me for most of my life, even now at 86. My parents weren't alcoholic, but they were very unemotional, I guess you could say. So, much so I doubted they even loved me. I guess I have always thought there was something wrong with me and that is why no one could love me. I found it impossible to relate to other people and spent much of my time by myself just riding my bike all over. My parents never seemed to be concerned about where I was or what I was doing so, I felt free to do whatever I wanted. I almost never did anything to get into trouble. When I got older, I still could not relate to others, I seemed to feel no one liked me so why bother....I guess. I was always self-conscious about how I looked, what I was wearing, if I said the wrong thing. So, I didn't say anything. Yes, I envied others who always seemed popular for reasons I could not understand. Anyway, two marriages gave me no satisfaction whatsoever. Both husbands didn't really seem interested in me as a person, only as someone they could get something from. I won't go into that. I only had two, maybe 3 people in my life who actually seemed to like me the way I was. They are long gone for different reasons, so at least I know what that feels like. Anyway, it wasn't until I was much older, and when I started to lose my eyesight that I began to "see" things in a different way. First, I decided to get a subscription to Audible Books, because I knew I couldn't read anymore. The first book I got, and still have, was the Book of Promise, which is a NKJV of the Bible. I began "reading" it every day. I still do. Something I never did when I could see. Like I said, I began to see things differently, and the first thing I realized was how self-centered I was. I was always thinking of myself, and how I looked, and would anyone like me. It was always me, me, me. When I watched others who didn't seem to have this problem, and who always was there for others, giving them a kind word, and encouraging them, I realized that was how I wanted to be, and stop focusing on myself. These people who were like this, were very popular, and even those who didn't look too "hot" themselves, or dressed funny, or all the things I tried to avoid looking like, but everyone loved them. Why? Because they were focused on others and not themselves. I still can't be around people, and in some way, I am almost happy that I am no longer able to be. But my focus has changed. I can relate to others who feel the way I have all myself. I understand how people can feel the way they feel, and I can try to give them encouragement, and pray for them when they are sick. There are so many people who are suffering in the world. They are much worse off than I am. So, I guess what I am trying to say is that I will always have a problem talking with other people, and always feel out of place with others, but I won't focus on myself anymore and focus on those who are really suffering. I won't worry so much about what others think of me. By the way I think you are very fortunate to no longer have sexual desires. Even though I will never experience that pleasure with the man I love and who loves me with the same passion, I still desire it, and I wish those feelings would go away. So, if people don't like who I am that is their problem, not mine. I don't think I really explained this the way I wanted. There I go again. Anyway, reading the Bible every day helped me a lot and I am also able to focus on God much better than I ever did before, and I believe that has had a great deal to do with my change in focus. No, I don't think I said all of this very well. But, I hope it somehow helped in some way. Take care of yourself.

@mariannewmoon,
you might try a stellate ganglion block. I suspect that you have PTSD. These injections are given in pain centers. It is a very small investment in time and may work wonders for you.

@gently Are you sure you are replying to the right person? I am pretty sure I don't have PTSD. You must have mixed me up with someone else.

Thank you, I have read the Bible from front to back twice in my life.
I have to figure this out on my own I know. It blows my mind that not one single so called "professional" can help me out they just take my money and provide nothing. I have gotten more help here than I ever got from doctors. I will use every suggestion I have gotten here that I have not tried. Again, thank you

@gently I don't expect feelings like you, and all of us who can relate, will ever completely go away. I guess my point has always been to accept them, realizing you can't do anything about what has happened in the past, and then stop living your life focusing on them. There are many other things you can find in the world that you could focus on that are more uplifting, beautiful, helpful to others, God, if you are so inclined, or maybe just plain fun. Eventually those negative thoughts should not have such a hold on you, because you have found other things, that are more satisfying to focus on. At least, that would be the goal. It could take some time, and practice too. Maybe that just sounds too simple. I guess a few years back I would have thought so. But I'm glad I finally came to that realization, for me anyway.

I was not sure. I never had anyone tell me I may have PTSD. I looked it up and realized that it is possible. I doesn't matter anymore. I do not get help when I go to doctors. I am foolish to keep reaching out like this. I am miserable and it is because I am a horrible person and cannot fix myself. I just got into an argument with my ex and when this happens I look internally and realize it is all my fault. I get the feeling that my children and family and friends are all sick of me. I cannot fix this!!!! I am crying and tired and I know I will end up all alone and deserve it. Sorry to complain and not be grateful and all that. On Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at

@grasping Sorry to hear how you are feeling about yourself. Actually, when I think about it, I feel pretty much the same way about my life. None of my 5 older kids will have anything to do with me. I don't blame them I was a terrible mother. Both of the men I married (not at the same time) were terrible husbands and fathers. It took about 17 years to finally leave the first one. And over 20 years to divorce the second. I blame myself for that too because I was so naive and just plain stupid to have married them in the first place. All I ever wanted is to love someone deeply and passionately and have them love me the same way. I finally learned, sometime in my 70's that is very unrealistic desire. But I still cry many nights grieving for something I know now will never happen. So, have I cheered you up yet? (joking) Anyway now that I am too old for anything like that to happen. I don't worry a lot about it anymore. It doesn't bother me that my oldest kids don't talk to me. I sent a letter to them, with a copy to each one of them to say I was sorry that I wasn't a good mother, and try to explain why I was like that, but they just assumed I was trying to make excuses. Like I said though, I don't really care. Believing in God I figure we will all meet again someday and will figure it out together. I am tired about thinking about all these things. I guess I have pretty much shut up all my emotional feelings I have had really, all my life. I make it a point not to be around others who don't accept me as who I am, which is much of the way you described yourself. I don't dwell on how awful I am anymore, or how I got that way. As I mentioned earlier, I began taking seriously my spiritual life and that has helped me more than anything else. I am able to think about more pleasant things now. I still cry at night, but I think of it as more of an emotional relief kind of thing. Well, I don't want to keep repeating the same thing over and over, but I just want you to know there are others in the world who go through the same things you are going through. I know there is nothing that can be done about these things now, only try to not make it the main part of my life. Don't give up though. Like I said I didn't really figure it out until I was in my 70's. Then all I could do was to accept who I am and try to live with it the best I can.
