Has anyone not used medication after First Dexa scan spine -2.8?

Posted by rmasters @rmasters, Aug 15 6:05am

I am 57, 5'2" and 110 pounds and have just had my first DEXA scan spinal -2.8 osteoporosis, femoral neck and hips -1.3. I exercise and eat well. I did go through surgical menopuase at 50. I have a blocked LAD artery and use injections of repatha for this. I am giving all these details because I really don't want to start any of these medications and wondering if anyone has ignored pressure from doctors, all of mine are encouraging Reclast. I am scared and tired of looking at all the pros and cons of everything. thank you in advance

@ou14mejc my experience personally and having read about the medications, is that OP meds do a much better job in improving bone density numbers in the spine as compared to the hips. I took Evenity for one year with good improvement in my spine, but hardly any improvement in my hips, where my numbers are in the -3 range. I am currently not taking any medications. I leave open the possibility, but really fear the side effects, and haven't found a palatable option among the medications. The good news, is that I experienced very little in the way of side effects with Evenity

@rn40

Are you saying that you didn't have a follow-up drug to keep any of your gains? Are you able to track that with bone markers or doesn't your endocrinologist do that. Mine does not and it is quite irritating...darn!

@rn40 I suppose the medications must affect people differently. I had severe numbers in my spine and the latest DEXA had improved to -1.3. I had taken the Forteo shot almost two years prior to this DEXA. On the other hand, my hips did not improve that much and were -2.9. I have been told that Forteo targets the spine and Evenity targets the hips. I have only had 3 injections, so time will tell if my hips improve. So, I guess my point is, that different people must get different results according to body makeup.

@gravity3 i did not have a follow up drug. I was not given good information at the time. I was told I would need to take Prolia, for life, and once I started could not stop due to the increased risk of vertebral fracture. If I knew I could take just one dose, I would have done that. But as I indicated, my worst numbers are in my hips, and I did not get improvement in my hips,

@rn40 Without Reclast or another bisphosphonate within a month after finishing your course, you'll lose practically all the gains of Evenity within a year!

If you need a link to research on this, I'll find it for you.

Not sure if I'm in the right box to comment but this is in response to the person asking if anyone had a 2.8 + and STILL resisted the meds
Yes Me
I started off even under 2.5 yet the doctors said a "lovely" drug for me would be Evenity. I got home and looked at the black box warning and it did not seem so lovely. This was 2020
I tried all the other things but maybe not so deligently. Can't remember what my score was in 2022 but in 2024 it my hips had gone =- oh I guess 2022 I was at the the big 2.5 - anyway my hips were at 2.9 I still hated to do the drugs.

I am doing a lot of the other things, all the weird calciums you find on internet, weight bearing - tho not "liftmor" intensity tho if I wanted to commute an hour and a half I found PTs here in states on the map on onero website that can offer it ( https://onero.academy/locations/ ) Have not done the Marodyne Vibration plate yet tho thought of it. Was most recently campaigning for HRT despite a lumpectomy 6 years ago and tho I've heard the rules are a little more flexible now two doctors told me that because mine was estrogen receptive or whatever no one would give it to me.

Meanwhile I am thinking of resuming skiing anyway by wearing hip protectors. They say they reduce fracture risk 50-80% and I think that's about what Evenity and Reclast do At least you can take the hip protectors off and go to the dentist the next week without fear.
