Stomach acid meds with prednisolone

Yes, it's fairly common to take an acid suppressor like Omeprazole if you're taking prednisolone/prednisone. I'm taking Pantoprazole, which is a similar drug prescribed for people in the US. But it depends on other medications you're taking and your health history. I found that the stomach irritation from prednisone eased once the dose got down to around 7 mg per day.

I always took Pepcid( Famotidine)at night while on prednisone and
dosed my steroid with meals. Also monitor your BP
and glucose at regular intervals.

I lived on Tums for a month when I was taking 25mg prednisone until my blood work came back with high calcium. Once I started tapering down, my acid reflux went down with it. I still get the occasional acid reflux but I use pepcid complete now. I was offered a prescription for an acid suppressor when I started prednisone but I didn't want another prescription added to my medicine cabinet. In hindsight, I should have filled the prescription.

Yes... it is very common to be prescribed "stomach protection" when started on prednisone. I was on Omeprazole for years when I took prednisone.

I'm not taking prednisone anymore so my stomach protection was stopped along with several other medications that were treating prednisone side effects. I don't know if stomach protection was necessary or not but I never got a stomach ulcer from prednisone.

I was eventually switched to Famotidine which is available in the USA both as a prescription medication and as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication. When my doctor prescribed Famotidine, my health insurance paid for it. I guess Omeprazole can also be by prescription so I don't remember why I switched. Generic famotidine might have been less expensive.

I also took/take famotidine. I take the 40mg as needed so Dr. writes the prescription for 4 times daily. I was on prednisone for 6 months and 4 years later still have stomach issues. It increased my A1C, BP, and cholesterol. I am still taking medication for those. I was not taking anything prior to PMR/prednisone. I was concerned about side effects with Omeprazole so I am trying to control with diet and as few a famotidine daily as I can.

Do you think what food you're eating when you you take the prednisone has any bearing on how it affects your stomach? I take my morning meds with hot oatmeal (a little applesauce mixed in), made with oat milk. I drink chamomile tea.

I take Prilisec (Omepraxole) and 2 ginger snaps from Dollar Tree along with a full glass of water with the Prednisone. I have no problems in spite of long term stomach issues. Water is key!

For myself, first thing in AM, I drink a large glass of water. About 10-15 minutes later I drink a small glass of organic A2/A2 low fat plain Keifer, which helps our microbiome (a huge part of our immune system), eat a low fat plain yogurt with a few blueberries and a few crumbled walnuts first, then I immediately take my Prednisone with another big glass of water.
A2/A2 keifer is made in such a way that Lactose intolerant people can drink it with no issues. I'm highly lactose intolerant. Also the yogurt I can eat with no issues is Trader Joe's low fat plain Greek yogurt. Something about the way Greek yogurt is made, but only that brand does bother my stomach. For myself, as long as I've been taking Prednisone (only since 7/31/26), I haven't had any stomach issues since I've eaten as above first. Tried taking it without the Keifer and yogurt in the beginning and my stomach hurt and felt really full of acid. Nothing at all this way. I hope it might help someone.
The better meal you eat first, probably means better outcome with the stomach. Oatmeal is a good one too.

@eparnold0219 Omeprazole PPI is contra-indicated with Clopidogrel blood thinners which I take. Lansoprazole is better and Pantoprazole is best - having minimal interaction with Clopidogrel - according to Copilot. My Rheumatologist missed this.
