Don’t be surprised if you have surprisingly higher numbers than you’re expecting to see in the morning hours. Some people experience what’s known as the “dawn effect” where your BG rises in the a.m. And remember, the finger stick reading is just a snapshot of that moment in time. Keep getting the A1c tests as they’re more like a movie showing your average over a 3 month period. You really need to look at both readings to get an overall picture. Your A1c may look pretty good overall, but you may be having some very highs and very lows that average out to an okay A1c, but you ideally shouldn’t be getting extreme readings in either top or bottom of the finger stick readings. (Doesn’t mean you can’t occasionally splurge on pizza or pasta or French fries, but be aware that your numbers are going to go up after such a treat.) The thing to really look out for is getting a peak reading that stays up for hours. Hopefully, if you do occasionally splurge, you’ll get a very high reading, but it drops back down relatively fast. That’s something to get more info on from your GP or endocrinologist.
