Doctors Reprimand Me For No Osteo Meds
Dear One's, my 1st time back on the blog in years. The block has been an inspiration, encouragement and support to me when I was active on it. I have become more ill over the years with many diseases, one of which is osteoporosis. I've had 7 hip fractures; 5 pelvic, 2 Femur. Ouch! No known trauma. Recently I've had several doctors reprimand me for not being on any osteoporosis medications. They have escalated, raised their voice , shook their heads and all of the above. One of them was a hospital doctor who knows me because of so many hospitalizations, said to me that she has seen me decline quickly in the past few years and can see me in a wheelchair in the near future. It was talking with people on the blog about around the world years ago about their experiences with bisphosphonates, Prolia and other osteoporosis medications, and doing a lot of my own research, that made me decide not to take any medications. I felt it was a quality of life issue because if you take something that lasts for 6 months (that's how I would have to take it because of kidney disease) or 1 year, then any unwanted side effects, would last until the half-life I was afraid of. I just can't take more pain! Has anybody else been treated that way by physicians for not being on osteoporosis medication? My dentist told me not to take I think it might be Alendronate aka Fosamax because she said it can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw. If my understanding is correct, the meds can improve fracture risk but not reverse osteoporosis. I have not looked into the medications in a few years. Maybe there's something new I don't know? My last two bone scans showed improvement with taking 3 mg of boron three times a day. I do take other supplements but know they are not as good as what we need that is found in food. I pray you all may experience the comfort of God and the “Peace of Christ which transcends all human understanding" Philippians 4:7. That is the only thing that gets me through is knowing Him well enough and understanding His purpose in all things and, that this life is so temporary; but a blink of an eye in light of all eternity. Jesus said, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no man comes to Me but by the Father." John 14:6 SunnyFlower

Thank you so much for your post. I have not taken my osteo meds for quite some time. I had to take a break to have dental work, with more to come. I did not start meds again. I have been so conflicted about what the Eurologist was going to say about my not taking meds. I have not
had any improvement on this medication, so I have decided to travel a different route with the proper food, supplements, exercise and weight lifting. I am going to find another specialist because there are issues that I should have been made aware of that are neglected.

What medication were you taking?
I, too, have been scolded over the years. I have not made a decision to begin medication for my osteoporosis because my dentist and oral surgeon tell me that it isn't a good idea since I have frequent dental work done. My doctor tells me I need it now! One finally said, "You may have to make a decision if you want bones or teeth." Oh my, what a choice... I would like to have both.
@hbjuniperflat personally I’d go for strong bones. Fractures are no fun!

I saw your post and thought I might share. I am 74 now and just experienced a vertebral fracture, no trauma, just happened..... I also put off using meds, and I was in early childhood ed, always on my feet, healthy eating, etc. but it didn't help me. I took Evenity for 3 months,to build bone, and stopped due to some side effects, and my Endo had me do a reclast infusion to lock in the gains. I wish I had made the choice sooner, might have saved myself from a fracture. Best of luck to you with your decision.

I take calcium 1200 mg a day. Vitamin K, Vitamin D, and magnesium. I eat fish, beans, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, and collard greens. When I get the urge for something sweet, I eat dried figs or apricots. I exercise and wear ankle weights around the house.

Those are helpful things. Do you have severe osteoporosis?
I forget if you shared them.

Sorry guys. Not even sure where I was going with this. Probably....
If you have severe osteoporosis it is highly unlikely that any supplements can make a meaningful impact on osteoporosis. That kind of "heavy lifting" will have to be done with meds.

2 ReactionsI do have osteoporosis. I have not had a fall since I was diagnosed. I took alendronate for 2 years before I started dental work. I was told that I could resume meds after dental work was done. I am assuming that my bones are serious for the doctor to prescribe bone meds after dexa scans. I am due for another scan soon. I know now what questions to ask after learning here what little I knew about my condition. Thank you so much.
