Calquence and depression

Posted by dbs2 @dbs2, Aug 4 3:39pm

I have CLL and have been on Calquence for about 14 months. 8 months ago out of the blue I started getting severely depressed. I am a 67 year old
male and I live a happy life. I have never been depressed. This was and is purely biological. I am currently still fighting it and am on a couple of anti-depressants which is also a first for me. I asked my oncologist if there was anyway that the Calquence could have triggered the depression and he was adamant about the fact that there was no research that indicated that it’s possible side effect. I have seen some people reference it on line but am curious if anyone in this group has thoughts about this or has experienced it. Thank you .

@dbs2, Mayo Clinic does not list depression as a side effect of Calquence (acalabrutinib). Read more here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/acalabrutinib-oral-route/description/drg-20406641

That does not mean that acalabrutinib did not contribute to your out of the blue experience with depression. I can imagine that this took you by surprise. There could be many things contributing to depression, even the diagnosis itself. Have you considered talking with a therapist or getting a referral to an oncology social worker? Have you found an anti-depressant that helps?
